Big Blue Book mark-up at Book Stores?

My friend just called me up to laughingly yell at me for putting such an expensive thing on my Christmas list. She was at Borders and looked up the Big Blue Book of Bike Repair, 2nd Edition, from Park Tool. It was something like $119.00. And out of print!

I said, "You didn't buy it, did you?" Luckily, she didn't. I told her it was supposed to be around $25. And I reminded her that I had written "local bike shop or JensonUSA" on my Christmas list.

Does $119.00 make ANY sense whatsoever? She swore up and down that it was the exact title, 2nd edition, by Park Tool.

I paid around $30 for Zinn's book.

I've only ever bought a handful of books for over $100 each. $120 is crazy.

This is exactly to what caveat emptor refers.

If you don't mind buying it online, it is listed on Amazon.com:

If she won't pay $119 for it from Borders I'll be glad to sell my lightly used copy to you for $118.99... shipping included.

The only books I paid over a hundred for were college books.

I got my Zinn book with the purchase of my frame. And it was signed!!

That was either a tagging mistake by the store, or maybe your friend read the price wrong. It could be that it was the remainders pile (the discount out of print books) and was marked at $11 or $19 and she misread it. Borders wouldn't price a book over its MSRP (which appears to be $24.99).

I happened to be at my local Borders (different from the one she went to) and I looked it up on their computer just for the hell of it.

Big Blue Book of Bike Repair, 2nd edition: $109.99
Big Blue Book of Bike Repair, used: $29.99

Someone screwed something up over there.
Damn. I was really hoping to get that for Christmas, too.
I have a feeling she didn't have time to get it online or find a LBS, so she stopped by a Borders. Stupid Borders.

Yikes, clearly a pricing mistake on their part.
