Hmm with regards to the original post and quote.
It seems the first four students weren't actually answering the question posed to them. Their answers are really more related to a question such as 'Why do you like to ride your bike?" or "What is the benefit of riding your bike?" or "What is the purpose of riding your bike?"
Only the last student actually answered the question posed to them "Why are you riding your bicycles?” But of course most people now-days do you think of that sort of question posed so literally but rather equate it to one of the first questions I mentioned. I think from that story the fifth student was just Aspy.
