bolt on bar ends

Love'm? hate"m? Thinking I'd try a cheap set instead of swapping bars on my MTB commuter.

frankenmike 01-25-09 09:02 PM

If they didn't send shooting pains up the side of my hand, I'd still be using them.

Yotsko 01-25-09 09:15 PM

Had 'em on my last bike. Nice for the different hand positions. Would probably work well for a commuter, but I'm not a fan of them on much else.

ed 01-25-09 09:44 PM

hate em

beatnik0422 01-25-09 09:52 PM

I love mine. If you're looking for alternate hand positions, you should definitely give them a try. Besides, they're pretty cheap. If you don't like them, you're not out very much.

Panthers007 01-25-09 09:58 PM

Not quite sure of what you mean here. If you mean bolt-on grips for flat, or riser, bars (mountain, hybrid...) - I use Ergons on my hybrid. The ones with the small extensions built in - like a pair of horns on the bike.:D

I love 'em - no more numbness or tingling. Don't have to ride my bike while flapping my hands like a ****z!

Why is 'S' 'P' 'A' 'Z' blocked??

z415 01-25-09 10:01 PM

Like 'em

dminor 01-25-09 10:01 PM

I like 'em for hangin' grocery sacks on, clothes hooks back at the hobo camp and sidewalk-jousting with those uppity people downtown who work in them fancy office buildings.

srglassw 01-25-09 10:47 PM

Have 'em, love 'em. Used to get numb hands but now I can change hand position and now no numbness.

I have bar ends on my MTB. They give you extra leverage and a more forward riding position for the steep climbs. I do not recommend them for commuting in traffic because they move your hands away from the brake levers.

maddmaxx 01-26-09 05:38 AM

When I put them on upsidedown, they remind me of my walker.

Hot Potato 01-26-09 06:50 AM

If you don't like the whole bull horn look, check out the small ones that pop on the end, and are half above and half below the handlebar. Very unobtrusive. Some are even "ergo" shaped. I will be test riding some later this week.

TallRider 01-26-09 06:58 AM

For most people, bar-ends are a comfortable hand position, and a welcome addition to a flat-bar bike. Of course you can't brake from them, but I have them on my flat-bar commuter and use that hand position regularly.

I love them. :)

In 1983 before they became popular, I cut up a set of Scott TT bars
that I no longer used and bolted them on my Ross Mt Whitney. Everyone
thought they looked funny ... Um hmm.. I knew then that someday
they would be the rage. I just didn't have the bucks to design, develope,
and market them. :(

They will give you a alternative position to place your hands. More
importantly, (at least to me) they provide a way to really grab and
pull up on when standing/sitting and climbing in technical terrain.

Just make sure they are properly attached and tight. :thumb:

i actually have bolt on bar ends that are drops! I found these beasts on ebay...they aren't bad...they are in no way as comfy as the drops on my road and cross bike...but they are nice to get down into when the wind is really kicking...

I never did learn to like flat bars but the barend extensions made them more acceptable. At least they provided an alternative hand position to the single sit-up-and-beg hand placement of the flat bars alone. The downside is your hands can't readily access the brakes or shifters.

I have a pair that you're welcome to have for the cost of postage. PM me.

^if he doesn't want them, I'm definitely interested.

BigBlueToe 01-26-09 09:24 AM

I prefer having them to not having them. Keep tweaking them until they feel right.

If I had it to do again, I'd get some like these:

They look as if they'd be comfortable, and I've read good reviews. My bar ends are aluminum and much longer, and I don't use all that length.

McQz 01-26-09 11:28 AM

I purchased a set of Profile Boxer Bar ends and Lizard Skin grips from Bike Stop. I had to move the controls and grips in about 5/8" (~16mm) to accomodate them.

I've been experimenting with angle and find that I like them just a little above parallel with the stem on my Fisher Wingra. The upper section offers a different position when it is time to stretch.

Got a set of Peak Pro or something like that. Basic bar ends and I love them. They hold fast. Smallish for my folder.

YungBurke 01-26-09 01:12 PM

I have some riser bar ends from singletrack solutions. i love them, they are just little stubs made of durable plastic and give a great grip for climbing, at least with my geo.

Merged this thread and the other 4 cross posted in multiple forums.

Ahh . . . the old 'suicide drops' mounting technique.

ebr898 01-26-09 02:54 PM

I love them on my mountain bikes.

Try them! Try them! You will like them, you will see. (oh too much Green Eggs and Ham, Sam I am). If some one is willing to give you some for shipping, give them a try.

I like mine "ski pole" style (with a goat, in a boat, in the rain, on a train.)
