Do any companies make a steel road bike w/ 3 speed hub?
The closest I've been able to come is the Sun Cyckel - and even that doesn't have drop bars - but does have a lugged steel frame and torpedo 3.
Anything out there I'm missing? |
It's easy and fairly cheap to add a 3sp hub to any bike you choose. I had one put in my
wife's Schwinn cruiser for $60. The 3sp is the cheapest hub you can buy with no quality loss. Ask your LBS how much they extra they would charge you if you bought the bike there. Bet it would be free or not much at all. |
The Swobo Novak is another candidate. Steel 700C tire bike with SRAM 3 speed hub. It does not have drop bars however.

As the other post said, it shouldn't be hard to convert. I have an old Trek touring bike I converted to singlespeed years ago, and I've toyed with the idea of having somebody lace the rim to a three-speed hub (I'm a lousy wheelbuilder, but it would be an easy job for a pro). If I ever get around to having it powdercoated, I'll probably do that while it's torn down.
You can also get a seven-speed internally geared hub, which would really be trick. |

The problem with new 3-speed hubs and drop bars is the shifter. Everyone has gone to twist shifters instead of the old thumb shifter that could be mounted on anything.

If doing a conversion then it is best to start with a frame that has horizontal or semi horizontal dropouts. That way you will not need a chain tensioner for adjusting chain tension.
A 3 speed hub is adequate for reasonably flat terrain but the 5, 7, 8 and 9 speed hubs are more versatile, though also heavier and more expensive. Jtek makes a bar end shifter intended for use with the Shimano 8 speed hubs and drop bars. All drop bar road bikes with gear hubs are conversions so far as I know. Dynamic Bicycles has announced a 8 speed drop bar gear hub bike that is due out in the spring or early summer. |
