Rustproofing Steel Frame
I have read a lot about people using WD-40 for this. Just spray it into any opening in the frame? How much should be used, and how often should this be repeated? Any other products to use or suggestions?
Thanks |
WD-40 does prevent rust, but it's too thin and runny to use in a frame. You can use Boeshield, which is a little thicker, but the best is J.P. Weigles Frame Saver. It's a goey, oily, resin made just for bike frames. It cost around $10 per can and you can treat several frames with one can. I just retreated my frame this morning with J.P..

Another vote for Weigles Frame Saver.

Do you remove the headset when spraying into the frame?

I also second Weigle's Frame Saver. One can should do at LEAST three bikes. I took both of my bikes (and my roommates) completely apart, padded all of the big openings with wadded-up paper towel, sprayed some in (do this outside, it stinks). I think taking the headset off is a good idea, it's not hard if you have the right tools. The frame saver is a thick brown goo, and it'd clog up the bearings pretty badly.

I've had no problems using WD40. The only problem may be with some bottom brakets if solvent can contact the bearings. With Shimano cartridge style, there is no problem.
I treat the bike about once per year, in Sept, and squirt some into every hole, then tip the bike around to spread it. I just happen to have WD40 and it works. It leavs a thin film on the tubes after it evaporates. You can remove the fork to squirt inside the TT and headtube. let the headtube dry a bit, you dont want solvent dripping onto your bottom headset race. |
