Oh wow. A good cycling buddy just broke his femur..

During A downhill, I am told.. When , I get back what should I bring as a get better gift.. A multi pack of Snickers.. Or a large bag beef jerky .. I tend to favor the beef jerky, protein is good for bone repair.. ?.. Descents have always been a fear of mine..Usually, I am the last one down.. I was not there to witness his crash....... .. A femur..!. ...Must have been a heck of a crash.. I feel awful about his crash.. A group of us were going to go on a multiple day tour this Summer. Speed kills all... A bike and bar buddy. Hate this for having happened to him.. What gifts do you get for our injured club members... Wonder how long a femur takes to repair..?

Milk.

Took me almost a year to be strong again. Half that before it could bear real weight. (alpine skiing)
You should make that multi multi packs of Snickers.

Wow, that's terrible - it must have been an awkward fall to break a femur

I'd say recovery will take a while - the femur is the largest and longest bone in the human body

Those 30 mile descents on hair pin curves scare the heck out of me.. I can just visualize hitting a concrete wall at that speed..Breaking a femur is possible..
...I thought it was the strongest bone in the body Tim..Must have been a heck of a crash.. .. I'm afraid we won't see Patrick on his brand new bike this year..And I've seen bikers wifes demand. No more...
.... The thing about high caloric chocolate when one is bed ridden, that's the time one gains weight. But, chocolate soothes over lots of human emotions. When I tore my rotor cuff I was given too much chocolate by my bike buddies.

Calcium helps with bone repair, but they'll tell him what he ought to be doing.
He can expect a pretty long convalescence in any case. A riding buddy of mine, a physician, fell off his bike right in front of his hospital about three years ago and hit his hip on the curb, snapping the femur off right at the neck. It took him at least a year to get back near where he was, but he's done a couple of dozen centuries since, and plans to ride from Reno to Yosemite Nat'l Park (about 220 miles) in one shot in June, on the longest day of the year.

As I react to pain. Think my favorite gift would be booze. Must booze be fattening.?

To synthesize the above:

White Russians and Hogfat Dipped in Chocolate.

Company is often in short supply in hospital and way more appreciated than food, in my experience. Arrange with bike buddies to see that he has someone to chat with every day (assuming he's not so much the solitary sort--in which case, books!). If he gets his human needs for sociability and understanding met well, he'll probably recover faster too.

Since it was a femur, this is a big deal.. Of course, I'll be there with booze and a large bag of beef jerky, I just bought.. Flying home today so I'll get an update on how painful is Patrick's injury..
