Saddle question
Recently bought a fantom cross and find that the seat is a litte harsh. Would it be considered acceptable to take my aftermarket seat I bought for my 7.5fx and put it on the fantom cross?

LOL. Great reply. Just seems like the hybrid seats are a little wider in general especially at nose vs cyclocross/road bikes. Didnt know if there was a reason to it or not is all.

Saddles are one of those things that in my experience you need to experiment with. I'd have given up cycling if I didn't change the saddle on my road bike, but now that I have, I itch to ride it whenever I can. Same goes for my mountain bike.
Different saddles fit people differently - what works for you may not work for me, and the converse is likely true as well. So, I say give it a go - worst case, it is less comfortable and you swap them back until you find another one to test. Manufacturers try to fit the saddle to the "average" of who they think will be buying the bike; for my dad that meant a wide padded saddle, and it works for him and his riding style. For me, well, he thinks the saddle I use is more of a masochistic option than anything else, but it works for me and the way I ride. |
I've got a pile of spare saddles in my garage. I keep even the ones I don't like. At first I did this because I'm a pack rat, but as a side-effect I've discovered that at least one saddle that I didn't like on one bike I did on another.
The riding position between the 7.5fx and the Fantom Cross is a bit different, so you might not like the saddle as well on the Fantom Cross, but it's definitely worth trying. In general, I think wider saddles work better for more upright positions, but everybody's got some minimum width below which nothing will be good. |
1. It's your bike so you can do anything that you want to with it. Might as well say it now - some people are going to criticize you no matter what you do or how fast or how slowly you ride. Do whatever you think is best for you and tell them to (shove) off.
2. Try the seat. If you decide that you like it - fine. If you don't like it you'll be no worse off than you are now - find another seat to try. |
Those fantom saddles are crap. I have the same one on my windsor and actually put up with it for half a year before swapping saddles with my hybrid, right before selling the hybrid. It works pretty well.
Question...what will you use on the 7.5 after you take the saddle? If you're swapping, OK...but I can't imagine the stock fantom saddle being comfortable on ANYTHING. |
