Gloves causing hand spasms

I have just started riding to work again now that it's spring, wearing Pearl Izumi gel gloves. Problem is, my thumb and fingers are spasming (too much pressure on the thumb pads, I think), and I'm having a hard time using my computer at work. Anybody else have this problem or a suggestion? Thanks!

hand stretching exercises? Less padded gloves or no gloves?

I had palm nerve pain until I switched to Ergon grips.

Do they occur when you specifically when trying to perform a particular action or without any kind of pattern at all? If it is the former you should see a neurologist.

Not sure what bars you're using, but on drop handlebars, I usually place my hand in a position that the main support is at the base of my index finger. It actually looks rather uncomfortable, but it works. Your index finger will be pushed far backwards, but the main load on your hand goes directly to the bone behind the index.

I'd see a rheumatologist and try some different gloves/no gloves for a bit. Maybe some new bar-wrap? What ever you recently changed plainly isn't working. It might not be related to the bicycling. It could be work related if you bang on keyboards for a living.

Good luck!

I would try different gloves and possibly try moving the handlebars a bit before I would ride with no gloves.

Thanks for all the advice!

The pattern is constant, not in particular motions, so I don't think it's nerve related, but a good thought. Think I'll try not using gloves for a few rides, maybe using the index finger idea. If that works, I'll try different gloves to see if I can find one with less pressure on the thumb pads (or no padding at all, if they make 'em).

I would say ditch the padded gloves and possible change your grips. As a previous poster said, Ergon grips are great.

A lot of the spasm can be caused by your hand actually being forced into a position that is stressing the muscles. This eventually causes spasms, and your muscles are tired, and fatigued form being in an unwanted position.

With out actually seeing you on a bike it is hard to say, but you could be in for some realy problems if this continues.
