I was thinking of getting a new motobecane mirage or super mirage...

Has anyone ridden any of these two bikes? Opinions?

Heres my 2001 Mirage I bought in 2002. They switched colors right when I was getting ready to order one and bikesdirect took care of me. I built this bike for the Hilly and I wanted downtube shifters so I could put on mountainbike gearing and I like having a new bike thats retro. I very happy with it. Rides great, lugged , eyelets and a chain peg! Weighs about 25 pounds though, heavy by todays standards. Good enough for a weekend rider like me

It seems like nobody rides motobecanes....

Any big difference between the mirage and super mirage? I know the super mirage has shifters on the handlebars, instead of downtube shifters. I personally hate downtube shifters, having to take your hands off the handlebars to shift sucks.

I have an old school 10 speed peugeot right now with downtube shifters. It probably weighs more than 25 lb. too

I guess what i'm asking is, is it worth paying about 400 for a mirage when i can wait for a sale on a cheap bianchi brava or even a used one?

I think you are better off with the newer bike (the super mirage). The geometry hasn't changed much, a few pounds won't make much difference in the beginning, and you will have the benefit of all new components, which all tend to wear out. when you are ready to upgrade, sell your used mount for whatever ebay will bear- and the prices on ebay seem to go a little high, and put that toward a new bike, with then current components and the frame and geometry you prefer after your taste has become more refined. As a note, however, last weekend I paid $377 for a leftover schwinn world sport at performance bikes. That bike came with 24 speed sora, and a compact aluminum frame with chrome moly fork, and is likely a pound or two lighter than the super mirage.

it was made in france. arent they made in taiwan if they're from the late 70s?

Bought a Mirage Sport for the wife. Biggest turd of a bike we own. 48cm frame feels like it weighs 30lbs, besides all the cheap components that are on it. Weight's sure not the paint, because that scratches with your fingernail.

Here's where I guess I'm supposed to say that since I own one it's wonderful. Sorry, can't do it. They got my $ once, never again. I prefer quality and this ain't it.

I wouldn't even think of calling something marked "MOTOBECANE" from BikesDirect to be even remotely related to a 'real' Motobecane. These bikes offered by this place BikesDirect are made in China and are generally garbage. And I sure have ridden REAL Motobecane Mirage bikes. They were a very nice, fast ride. But that has nothing to do with a rattling box of parts you'll likely get if you order from those schnooks.

Motobecane bicycles were made in France.

I have far less money tied up in my real Motobecane Super Mirage. It has a very nice ride. Lightweight and greasy-fast and made of steel.

Now that ^^^ sounds like a real Motobecane Super Mirage. Motobecane bikes all have a fast and lively ride. I used to have a Grand Touring - and it was fast and smooth. Too bad some ditz ran me over.
