Can you really fit all you need in a jersey pocket.

Maybe, it is that my rides are usually pretty long and time consuming..It is rare I can fit all I need in a Jersey pocket...
When you go out for hours...You have keys, id, power bar..Maybe arm, leg warmers..Maybe a jacket...
Most rides you fit all this stuff in a jersey pocket..Most of the time..Maybe racers have to? Almost all rides I need at least a handlebar bag.. Some recreational rides I even desire a rack and bag there.Particularily in the winter..
In fact, Guess I really don't like anything on my back..Most often that includes my jersey pockets..

I have a tool bag under my saddle where my tools, cell and keys go. Everything else goes in the jersey. I remember it taking some getting used to. I carry a spare water bottle (sometimes two), gels, food, id all that jazz in my jersey. It doesn't bother me.

i also have a tool bag under my saddle with a tube, patch kit, co2 pump and two cartridges.
on my back i carry a power bar, id/bank card/money, keys and cell phone.
most of the time i dont find it to be a hassle except for really hot days. on those days i will just throw my cell, keys and id into my tool bag (its a pretty damn tight fit though)
i could see how if you take arm warmers things could seem to fill up pretty quickly though

I can usually carry all I need in my jersey pockets plus a small saddle bag. But if you need more cargo capacity I recently saw a trick by a local pro that could be useful for fall/winter: cut the top off a water bottle. You can fit your arm and leg warmers or a thin jacket in it.

The thing someone recommended to me was to use one of those plastic tubes that tennis balls come in - it fits into a bottle cage and it's got plenty of room for stuff.

Caloso..Paul..Great tips..Usually I can take but one water bottle, since water fountains are common on most of my rides..With this advice, maybe I can just throw away that rattly handlebar bag..I really do not like it.
I have been able to go with just jersey pockets and saddle wedges if the ride is just short and fast and the weather perfect.

This might be a silly question, but do you worry about valuables falling out of the jersey pockets? I'm afraid to put keys/money/id/cellphone back there. I'm just not sure how secure it is. I usually put my phone/id/money/keys in my saddlebag, and just gels and a powerbar in my pocket. I guess it depends on the jersey, cut and fit (tightness) but does stuff ever fall out?

I've never had anything fall out on its own, but I have dropped stuff trying to fish it out, usually if I'm wearing full-finger gloves.

for those guys w/ the cut-off bottle, do you just ride with one bottle? I definitly cant do that. the only time I find I have trouble fitting stuff is when I run out of powerbars and have to use the dining hall "power food", a bagel and a banana. that takes a lot of space. espeically the banana. on my RLX jersey, the banana stucks out of the pocket. I suppose i could just put under the leg of my shorts...heh

I've only seen guys do the cut-off bottle thing to hold a jacket or warmers in the winter (which is pretty mild around here) so you probably wouldn't need two full water bottles. At least I wouldn't.

Our winter mornings here can be in the low 40's..I find that pretty cold on a downhill..I need more than a thin jacket for that. But, most of my jackets are foldable with a strap about the waist. That can save lot of bottle space..
But,then I do not like the feel of straps about my waist.

If you use a hydrator you don't need a water bottle. The cage is either for storage as described, or for the air bottle for an Air Zound horn.

You guys must carry a lot of stuff. If I can't fit it in my jersey pockets I don't need it.

My standard loadout is detailed in this recent post. I can carry most of stuff with some room to spare in between my jersey pockets and my small saddlepack. If I need more room, I can switch to a larger saddlepack and/or mount some Bento Boxes.

I also did the waterbottle trick for a while but then on one of my rides, they were giving away waterbottle travelpacks which I use sometimes on short rides or rides that I can easily get away with only one waterbottle.
