It really didn't hurt
 

Wile moving some product today at work I ended up putting a small gash in my hand.

The bad news the gash was about 1.5" and required 12 stitches

The good news I didnt slash any tendons

The really bad news no riding for 10 days :cry:

and the STP is only 5 weeks away good thing I should heal by then

But what do I do now 10 days no bike I don't know if I can handle it :(

That's a bummer. A broken leg once put me out for 2 months :eek: ... at least it's just a hand....I mean you really only need one hand anyway right :D

Not really biking related, but about 5 years ago while my wife was working at Costal Seafoods (probably the best fish monger here) she too cut open her hand. The knives had just been sharpened that day from the service, which of course means they were razor sharp. Opening a case of PBOs (pin bone out salmon), she cut through not just the straps holding the top on the case, but through two layers of gloves as well. Realizing she had cut herself, but not realizing how bad, she took a look at her had (I assume after saying a few words which would be sensored here). First the neoprene glove peels away, then the latex glove, finally her skin itself peels back to reveal bone. About a 3 inch gash she inflicted upon herself, one which required 26 stitches in order to repair. Luckily she missed any major bloodvein, or else the situation could have been more dire. We have pictures, she looks like she has a frankenstien hand, quite interesting.

The wierdest part about it is, she doesn't have a scar... The person giving the stitches most have been quite competent, because her hand looks normal, I think the sharpness of the knife must of had something to do with this as well.

Ok first of all what is the deal with 10 days......if your confortable riding THEN RIDE. Some doctor guy cant tell you what to do.....and if the tiny little cut on your hand feels ok on your bars then whats the problem? Of course if will heal in 5 weeks.....come on.

Well lets see 10 days until the stitches are removed. since it is in my hand I can't pull the brake lever. Its on the palm of my hand. And yes it hurts to put pressure on it. SO I guesss that means I am not comfrotable riding.

A little bit about me and riding. Last year I got into an accident on the bike broken nose hairline fracture in the wrist, broken tooth. I rode away from the accident. After my co workers made me go to the docotor he said a month, I took 3 days off from riding then I was back in the saddle.

I would imagine that even a little pressure on the hand; like holding the top of a handlebar, combined with the downward angle of the arm and the flow of blood, would cause that wound to throb mercilessly. Especially in the first few days.

That'll go away shortly if it hasn't already.

Guys, sutures are only supposed to hold the wound together to heal. They are not meant to be stressed. If he doesnt keep pressure off his hand it will reinjure any healing that has occurred, delaying healing, and will be more likely to have excessive scarring. Before you talk about not caring how it looks, remember that that scar tissue will cause pain every time you grip your handle bar. I'm really sorry about your injury, but 10 days isn't all that long. You could pass the time looking for some new gloves so your newly healed hand has the best protection.

10 days not that long I am already experiancing wothdrawl :D

I have been doing urban hiking the last couple of days to stay active. Today took me by one of my LBS restocked on some maintanence items I needed and shopped for gloves. Also stop by the drug store to get some sports tape to hep protect my newly healed hand.

Would it be worth trying a 'bent or semi-'bent, and p'raps renting one for the time being? Hand position is higher, and there's no significant body weight on the hands via the handlebar. Braking might still be an issue, tho'.

It is only a week away, though I am going to do a test run Saturday. It is healing up very nicely.

The wait will just make that first commute that much sweeter :D
