To All Type 1 Diabetics Out There

I am a new member and I don't know if this has already been done or not but I couldn't find it.

I just want to make a place where diabetics can come and share stories and advise for others with the same condition. It could be anything from how you prevent lows while riding to what kinds of things you keep on your bike to treat them. Also put anything else out there that might be helpful to someone with this condition. You never know it could save someones life.

I am new into cycling in general so I don't have a lot of stories or advice about this yet.

Hopefully this can be helpful to others as well.

Good idea. I'm Type 2, and know that I have issues trying to deal with carb intake and days riding versus days not and the associated glucose/intake levels. Be nice to share experiences.

This is sometimes discussed in Training & Nutrition

There's a few conversations in the "Clyde & Athena" forum- generally Type 2's trying to lose weight, though. I think you'd find better coverage in diabetic-specific forums, but I'm can't point you at any. I try to limit my time staring at the computer.

FWIW: I'm fairly weird. I'm Type 1, but I didn't develop it until I was 26 (I'm 46 now). I was already a long-time cyclist at that point, so maintaining consistent glucose levels and HgA1C's is relatively straightforward. My doctor is a cyclist, too, and has a diabetic daughter, so we have lots to talk about.

I am a type two diabetic. One of the things I learned the hard way was to be careful consuming energy drinks while on a tour. I had the misfortune of consuming Gatorade like water and was wondering why my numbers were high. It was not until I shared my story on BF and found out that I should have been diluting the drink. I now pay more attention to what I drink as well as what I eat. also dlife.com has been helpful to me.
