Single or three speed?

I recently got hold of a single speed Pashley Guv'nor on ebay, with the intention of rebuilding with a 3 speed sturmey hub (I live in quite a hilly area). Since getting the bike, I've discovered that because it's so light it's actually not that bad going up inclines, and I quite enjoy not having to think about gears. Now I'm not sure. Once I make the decision to change there's no going back! Arrggghh! Any advice? Does anyone have a three speed Guv'nor?

Keep it SS since it is working for you. A 3-speed conversion may create problems you don't have. In other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm thinking that, unless your bike was designed to be a 3-speed and has the necessary cable fittings etc, converting it is going to be a bigger project than you are anticipating.

The 3 speed version is exactly the same apart from the hub and I have all the necessary parts so it wouldn't be too much of a problem. At the moment though, it 'works' as a bike and I'm not sure if I want to risk loosing that. Think DieselDan might be right when he said "If it aint broke then don't try to fixed speed' - no wait . . . err

Speaking for myself, I would rather ride a properly set up 3sp. I've recently switched out the 18T cog on the SA, for a 22T. Makes climbing the few local hills quite abit easier. I spend most of my time in 2nd or 3rd anyway, but that 22T assisted 1st gear is sweet when needed! :thumb:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Save the project for some time later when you feel like doing it. Then it'll be more fun anyway.
