Making your own sports drinks?
Would this be hard?
I cant recall what forum I saw that someone had their own formula or something for their own sportsdrink, and I think it would be fun to try and make them.
Anyone have any recipies they'd like to share?
Thanks

This is probably a useless reply, because it's an idea rather than a recipe: Water, a generous splash of lemon juice, plus sugar and salt. Someone said you should use a mixture of salt and no-salt, because the no-salt stuff contains potassium. Right now I'm just taking tiny steps in that direction, by using less powder than the gatorade/cytomax instructions say, but adding lemon juice to cut the sweetness and salt because I don't think gatorade is actually salty enough.

I buy something called Smart Water, it is purified water with just electrolytes, no sugar taurine etc and I add limeade and cranberry juice to it. Sometimes I add sugar free Tourani syrup for other flavors. I didn't want the sugar, caffeine or taurine in my sports drink.

Here's one that I make, which is loosely based upon several recipies previously posted to BikeForums. I call it Landstander's Own gee-I-hope-this-doesn't-suck Sport Mix.
Stats per 8oz serving (using grape Kool-Aid)
[1] This is a mixture of table salt and potassium chloride... I use it 'cuz we already have some, plus I'm too cheap to waste that dollar! Basically, I want to end up with a 3:1 ratio between the two components.
[2] This was the only liquid B-complex supplement I could find at my local drugstore. Feel free to make any appropriate substitutions, or even omit it entirely.
- 2 quarts water
- 1/4 packet suger-free (not unsweetened) Kool-Aid (approx. 7.5g)
- 1 Tbsp honey
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp Morton Lite Salt[1]
- 1/4 mL Nature's Bounty B-Complex liquid vitamin supplement[2]
Calories: 18
Carbs/Sugar: 4g
Sodium: 109mg
Potassium: 43mg
Most of the recipies I've seen used unsweetened Kool-Aid as the base, but I found that didn't work very well for me. By the time I added enough honey and/or sugar to make it palatable, I might as well have just mixed the @#$% stuff full-strength in the first place.Carbs/Sugar: 4g
Sodium: 109mg
Potassium: 43mg

I mix this powder:
1 packet kool-aid (unsweetened)
1 cup of sugar (a little short is ok)
1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (salt substitute)
1/8 teaspoon salt
Then I make my bottles on a one by one basis to taste. Sometimes I know I'll want it stronger or more watery. I think full-strength is about 4 teaspoons powder mix to 10 oz. water.
Yes, this is just salted kool-aid. I prefer the lemon-lime.

- but it's pretty darn close!
- for me, mix Gatorade from a powder for just enough taste to mask the nasty plastic taste of my Specialized bike bottle...

I'm looking at all these home-made sport drinks that you've all made and such and they all look valid. One thing I haven't seen is how does it fair when you are out biking? Has it helped you on your ride? Waste of time?

For me, it's the same as powerade. I can generally predict (depending on time of day and what I've eaten) if this should be a water or a salted kool-aid ride. The sports drink thing works best for me when I take a morning ride on an almost empty stomach (usually a splash of coffee in there). I never drink a second bottle of the stuff. If I'm riding past the first 1-2 hours ... then I drink water and maybe eat something (apple, granola mix, clif bar, a few crackers). I also sometimes carry a ziplock w/ some of the sports powder along ... a very small amount can take the nasty taste out of a drinking fountain refill along the way.

If you want just electrolyte replacement without "energy" additives, check out Sqwincher Fastpacks. They come in a foil pouch and are already liquid. You can tear the top off the pouch, fill it with water, and drink out of the pouch! Alternately, you can pour the liquid into your bike bottle & fill with water. No stirring or leftover powder since the stuff is already liquid. In case quantity (400 pouches) they cost less than nine cents per pouch AFTER SHIPPING! There are 10 different flavors, and I've liked all that I've tried so far. I bought a case and will give my LBS 100 of the pouches for them to check out. Hopefully, they'll choose to stock the stuff & I won't need to order 400 at a time!
