I think I hit 42 mph on a pretty small, but long downhill grade (might have only been 38 mph, I don't remember). That was on a mountain bike, and I had to pedal pretty hard.

On a flat stretch, with nothing but my own legs, I have gone about 27, for a very short burst.

On a very slight downhill, I've pedaled up to ~36

On a steady downhill - ~40

On a steep and short, straight downhill - 48 for a few seconds, but well over 45 for a good part of the downhill.

My record at this point is 46.2 down a nice 7%ish grade that lasted for probably a mile. The only problem- cliff on one side and cars on other. The cliff also tended to like to dispense small rocks into the bike lane. The only reason I tried it on this hill is because I found a good gap between cars and took the whole lane. Still, not the smartest place for me to try it.

I could have done better.

I definitely have a defective odometer. It's wireless, last ride show a max speed of 80mph.

I hit 95 km/h on a long descent on my Mongoose ATB with slicks. Climbing back out was not much fun though.

I regularly go over 50mph [GPS] coming down Palomar (I passed a motorcycle last time) and coming down Twin Oaks Parkway by CSU-San Marcos. But the fastest I ever got was coming down Mount Baldy--terrible speed wobbles and my (admittedly pre-GPS) Schwinn Paramount computer registered 71.1mph.

63MPH, loaded (credit card tour) coming down the grade outside of Lompoc into Santa Barbra. I'm glad I was being kept too busy keeping the bike under control to notice my speed!

50 MPH down a steep hill. 32 MPH on a flat with my pedals providing all the power.

45+ lots of times on descents, 50.1 once on a steep downhill in the Civil War Century near Thurmont, MD. Didn't know that I'd broken 50 until I got home and downloaded the data. I don't look at the GPS much during fast descents....I want to live.

88mph. It felt like a rip in the time space continuum.

Also, 736.9mph coming down Mt Baldy.

Coming down Hytop mountain in Southern Tennessee, I passed a rider who later said he hit 60mph on the descent. It's amazing to me how much faster you can go if you can hold an aero tuck position all the way down.

I was behind a tandem on a descent where I hit 57mph. They were much faster and thirty years older than me!

41km/h going downhill on my hybrid. Scared the crap out of me.

Last edited by Luddite; 07-18-09 at 06:07 PM. Reason: km/h not mph. D'oh.

Hit 44mph on one of two nice downhills today on my SWB 'bent. Felt very smooth and controlled.

Maybe the shop hit 55 and didn't reset prior to your viewing?

62 mph on descent from Lake Wolford during The San Diego Zoo Ride behind a tandem.

On a red Vitus w/ Sun Mistral wheels. The first AL bike frame ever built.

Its a wonder I'm still alive.
