Pinging sound in the potholes

Today on the way home from work on my road bike I accidentally went into a hidden pothole. My front wheel dropped and there was a loud, metallic 'ping'. I've noticed this before when hitting something hard and fast. Anyone know what causes this sound? Is it just the road hitting the rims?

Sounds like spokes. It's quite likely that one or more spoke in the front wheel are not tensioned properly. Pluck the spokes like guitar strings. If one has a very different pitch than the rest, then you've found the problem.

I have also had a sound like a ping or gong from a top tube run of bare shifter cable hitting against the top tube when riding on rough roads on a steel road frame. One of the reasons for installing cable donuts on bare top tube cables.

Lately this has been my signal to stop & look for a broken spoke. Must redouble my diligence when truing & tensioning. To be fair to m'self, the two bikes I've had problems with are very old & 'well used'.
