Bikes and Dads

My first cycling memory, after mastering my tricycle that is, is my dad coming home from work with training wheels so he could teach me how to ride a bike. After supper he attached the training wheels to my new to me bike and I took off in a flash down my street with the training wheels hitting the pavement.

My father had to drop out of school at grade 8 to help support his family after his dad had a bad industrial accident. One of his first jobs was to deliver vegetables by bicycle around Winnipeg’s city centre.

I sure miss him.

Happy fathers day to all the dads out there!

Great story. Especially for those of us whose dads aren't around.

My dad taught me how to ride by holding onto the back of the banana seat and walking, then jogging, behind me. He's as tall as I am now, and I can't imagine bending sideways like he must have been doing for as long as he did it. He must be the most patient man in the world.

Then he says, "Try looking really far forwards, all the way to the end of the block." That stabilized me immediately, and within a couple minutes I was riding on my own.

My Dad didn't teach me to ride a bike; throw a ball; fish; dance; talk to girls or cook. But he taught me other stuff and I love him and I'm glad to have him around, even now. One of my brothers taught me to ride a bike. One of the same brothers that tied a rope around my trike and hoisted me, on my trike, up into a tree as a joke. Dad wasn't there to save me. He was too busy teaching me how to earn a living ... :-)

my parents taught me how to ride by shoving me down a hill.......a grassy hill. no my front upper teeth overlap.......................cushioned bar grips my ***.

I taught mine at the local baseball fields so that they could relate their short goals of getting to 1st base, then 2nd, etc to bike learning. also the dirt was softer than asphalt. they always wore knee pads and even wrist guards. they landed on their knees a lot - any advice for new dads teaching biking - knee pads! anyway - my kids got around and eventually all the way round to home plate. this also helped teach them early on about turning. I've been there a lot for my kids and taught them tons of stuff my dad didn't teach me. ironically I haven't been able to teach them how to earn a decent living. I guess you can't have everything ...?
