Bikers should get tickets for driving bad? Badutzio?

So I have been talking about getting tickets while driving bikes on the road, for things like going down the wrong side of the road, ect. I have a longer discussion of it on my blog.

Apparently, after having read your self serving blog, you are a perfect driver. I'm so proud of you. I'm so sure you obey all the laws you accuse others of not obeying. Your tirade is old and tired and holds no value on this forum. Now get yourself a bike and get the experience you seem to think we all need to have because we are not you.

What a twit.

You read something out that blog that I didn't.
But giving ticket to bike rider will do just as much good as giving them to car drivers.:thumb:

You might want to start enforcing all rules for all road users instead.

I agree totally. It's just that the tripe the OP is posting always comes from someone who has never been in a bikers situation. I doubt he knows there are laws motorists are obligated to that bicyclists are not obligated to and there are laws bicyclists are obligated to that are in no way associated with motorists. Imagine that if you will.

The OP is a very uninformed cager to say the least.

Oddly, every driving test I've ever taken NEVER mentions motorist/bicyclist safety at all. EVER. Funny that

Hey blog guy, guess what, bicycles are considered vehicles! Badutzio!

Guess what? Bikes are more than capable, BY LAW, to take over a lane when necessary as long as they are not obstructing traffic.

Guess what? Cyclists are susceptible to tickets! Cops have been handing out tickets to those running reds, stop signs as well as speeding. Which I 100% agree with when valid. A bike traveling at 40 mph in a residential neighborhood may not be as dangerous as a car, but it'll do a great amount of damage to anyone that the cyclist collides with.

So they are treated like any other vehicle. Just like how not every driver gets pulled over for speeding, running a red, or rolling a stop sign... Same goes for cyclist.

"Bicycle Use. VC 21200

Every person riding a bicycle upon a street or highway has all the rights and is subject to all the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle, including the provisions of law dealing with driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages or drugs, except those provisions which by their very nature can have no application."

Wait...WTF is this? I've been a cyclist for more than 40 years as an adult, and I've seen at least hundreds, if not thousands, of riders doing things that should have gotten them tickets. Things got much worse with the jump in popularity of cycling after Lemond won the TdF, and again after Lance--every a-hole in town got a bike, a jersey and an attitude. If we're going to "demand" a share of the road and insist that we be regarded as legitimate vehicles, we have to follow the same rules as everybody else on the road. You can't ride on the wrong side, chop somebody off in traffic, run a stop sign and then whine because drivers don't show you respect.

Velo, exactly right. I expect to be treated as a legal vehicle on the roads I pay for access to. I obey all the bike laws, when I ride pavement. I stop, I yield, signal, take my turns, signal, the whole bit, but yet watch cagers omit these actions from their own operation and then stick me in the same box with bikers who don't. I don't like it any more than anyone else. It is what it is. I obey the laws to keep ME safe as well as keep motorists from deciding to dump their frustration with brainless bikers on me. Did you go to Badutzio's blog? He's clueless. I obey the laws when I ride street, but see motorists as a danger, so I bought a mountain bike and now I don't have to deal with them. In a way, I'm losing because I gave up road riding. I really do miss my old TREK 760. Believe it.

By the way, I have been riding since I was 12 years old, that was back in 1966. Never been hit or ticketed, and don't intend to change that any time soon. I don't care to ride in groups because I don't care to gain the drivers wrath after everyone else runs the light/sign, and I stop, but am the last to stay and deal with the motorist because everyone else
ran the stop. I even stop when there is no traffic. That way I get to stay on the bike longer, and sprints don't bother me. But as I said, I gave all that up because I do not trust motorists. I drive with them and have seen what they do to bikers.

^^^^ What he said.

Funny thing is I saw an article somewhere about people in cars rolling stop signs, seems at this one particular intersection it was over 80% of the cars DIDN'T STOP. IIRC it was in Portland, OR. I have observed similar behaviour. Face it, when it comes to traffic laws the bulk of Americans seem to pick and choose which ones they want to obey, then scream like hell when they get caught breaking one, or if they think someone else is getting away with something they got caught doing.

Aaron:)

According to his blog, he wants everyone to "call people out" or such. I knew a guy like that. He'd get everyone's face and ranked on them. Predictably, he did this to some gang-banger's in Miami. Out came the box-cutters and they gutted him like a fish. Even his parents (he was 20 when he deceased) said he had it coming. That's what they said to the news media.

I have another name/phrase for this sort of character. It's BOHICA!

Funny thing is when cops start writing tickets for bikes, and after the press reports it, then the same people complain the cops are wasting tax dollars and should be out protecting people. Mods should remove thread as it disrupts the forums.

Right on to all. Vehicle operators (all kinds) don't get tickets for doing the right thing. Pay it and move on, hopefully after learning from the mistake.

sedition 07-05-09 09:08 PM

I got a ticket last summer for "riding to endanger."

HandsomeRyan 07-06-09 04:11 AM

Most ticketing that occurs is for fund raising not public safety.

Bingo.

geo8rge 07-06-09 09:35 AM

Police can already give tickets. A better idea might be to come up with rules of the road specifc to bicycles that take notice of the fact that they are not automobiles.

Riding a bicycle on a sidewalk is not the same as driving a car on the side walk.

King County, Seattle's home, has bike specific laws. I used to know most of them when I lived there. Those laws, as well as being in the books, are printed on the back of 24" x 36" maps of the city's bus and bicycle routes and available for 50 cents at the Muni building on 4th Ave. between James and Terrace sts.

I'm sure most large cities would have similar laws and maps. Personally, I figure common sense is really just as good.
