I have been looking at purchasing a trainer lately as the days get over the century mark here. I have a limited budget and have been looking at two trainers so far. They are the Nashbar Fluid Trainer $149.95 and the Ascent Fluid Trainer $119.99. I would like to know if anyone has had any experience with these units or if you could recomend a better unit for around the $150 mark but will go up to $200 if need be. I would like to get a kurts unit as I have heard good reviews about them but unfortunantly I am unable to afford it at this time. Thank you for your time.

Why not invest in a Camelbak (or at least a couple of insulated bottles) and ride early in the morning? There's a group ride around here that leaves at 5:30 A.M. so the riders can get in a ride while it's still relatively cool.

I would like to do that but I work from 6AM to 7PM every day so I do not have much time before work to ride and it is just too hot after. The air quality index where I live was 182 today with a high of 107. People around here are advised to always exercise indoors during the summer. Riding around my house at times, the air is so bad that I would compare it to riding in a dust storm. This is why I need to purchase an indoor trainer until the summe is over.

I wish that I had some answers for you, but I would also like to get some information about these two trainers. From reading around these forums the nashbar one seems pretty good, but for the difference in price, it would be nice to get the ascent if it also is pretty reliable. It would also be cool to get some sort of warranty information.

I have no experience with either. Make sure you get one that is appropriate for your weight. The lighter duty fluid trainers are generally made of lighter materials and suit women or light men. If you weigh over 180 and really work hard on a trainer, you can spread the bars and the bike falls out. Cyclops is a better option if you can hold out and spend a little more.

Thanks, I have been looking at the cycleops today and see that they seemed to have fixed the leak problems. So I might just save my money a little longer for this one, even though this will mean less riding for now. All I am able to ride, right now due to the heat and air, is to and from work, which is only 2 miles one way, and even this is taxing.

I can't help you with advice on either one of those, but can tell you that many people don't like trainers and will sell them pretty cheaply. I bought a used Tacx trainer from another BF member and have been pretty happy with it. Why not look for a used one?
