Old Schwinn questions...

Hey all - first time here. I did a search but came up null, and Google hasn't been much help.

I just bought an old Schwinn World Traveller from a goodwill store for $10. It is a 10-speed in yellow. It says it's made in Japan. There's a "bicycle license" sticker on it for 1975-76, so the bike must be at least that old.

I was wondering how old this bike might be (when were they made)? The bike shifts into all gears fine and shows no rust, but if I needed to service it, are there websites that explain how? One of the tires is starting to crack from age - what size tires do I need to buy for it?

This is the first bike I've had in 10 years - just wanted something to go out and ride on - so I don't know much about bikes in general, and certainly not much about this one. Thanks in advance for any help!

I've recently aquired a few old schwinns myself, and I'd like to get some more. Check out oldschwinn.com for info on dating your bike. Bikeforums.net is a pretty good site for information on servicing. Sheldonbrown.com is another good site for all around information on bicyles.

Doesn't it say on the badge where it's been made? Something like Chicago... If I am not mistaking, somewhere in the early 80s, a Schwinn bicycles were primarily assembled on Chicago plant. Then they had few plants somewhere in the South and after that most Schwinns were coming from Asia.

Congrats on the purchase.
I hope it will give you good service, as did mine - early 80s Traveler aslo purchased for 20$.
You might need to change wore out or damaged components, but if a frame is in good condition, it most likely will not cause any troubles throught the bike's life.

Good luck.

Try this link: https://www.geocities.com/sleeping.geo/bike.html then go to one of their Schwinn links. Get the serial number off the frame and check it on one of the Schwinn sites to get the age. I work on a lot of old Schwinns and ride a 73 Continental that I've regeared and put back in top form. I installed aluminum rims and new hubs. It runs great now. The tires are usually 27" x 1-1/4". Hope you get it in good shape and have a great time riding.
