Portable Light Lane

1 Attachment(s)
I just seen this at New Scientist site.It was 1 of 10 new designs awarded. Not on the market now but maybe later.I just thought the concept was cool.

Personal cycle lane

Cycle lanes are a good way of keeping bikes away from cars and minimising accidents, but they aren't available on every road.

Evan Gant at the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and Alex Tee of Altitude Inc in Somerville, Massachusetts, have designed a portable cycle "Light Lane" that straps to the back of a bike.

A laser projects an image of a cycle lane onto the road directly behind the cyclist to remind approaching cars to leave room.

There has been some discussion about that a few months ago, as well as on Slashdot. Some concerns are that if it uses a laser, rainwater or reflective surfaces might dazzle drivers.

This is a nice idea, but I'm not sure if it can be put into production.

I saw a video of a prototype in action. The virtual bike lane was visible but it was not overwhelming. Not to mention that I was actually looking for it, as opposed to drivers who nearly have to be hit over the head to notice you. It sounded as though battery life was about 3 hours. Which doesn't sound all that bad until you realize that a serious rider would have to replace them about every day.

It's a nice idea but it looks like it's maybe not quite up to real world conditions.

what about use in daylight? that pic is taken during the night when it can be well seen. but I doubt it would work very well during the day. good idea, still needs some tweaking

I was thinking it was only for night time use.It would be hard to believe the light could ever be seen in sunny daylight.I thinks its cool but like you guys already mentioned its probably never going to work in real world riding.

Interesting idea. Is this a proof-of-concept prototype or a preproduction prototype? Do you have a link?

EDIT: OK, just did a little googling and found this link: http://www.lightlanebike.com/

As of May it is a proof-of-concept prototype. Production is still unknown.
