What mini lock to buy for Krypto NY chain?
 

Hi all--just bought a 3 ft' Krypto NY chain for my new bike on Craigslist (my last bike was stolen a couple weeks ago). What is the most affordable lock that I can buy to put on this chain? I live in NYC and when I lock it up, it is for an hour or two at the most--not overnight. Nevertheless, I want to get a quality lock without breaking the bank. I know the NY chain is often sold with the Evolution disc locks, but I don't want to have to spend a lot of $$$ if there is something else that will work just as well.

Hardware stores and big box places like home depot have a decent selection of locks. If power tools are used it does not matter what you get.

Normally the NY Chain comes with a heavy duty lock, part of why it is so expensive. Most relatively inexpensive locks have pretty small diameter and cheesy steel shackles which are too easily cut even with a relatively small bolt cutter. Such a lock seems pointless for use with the NY chain as security is only as good as the weakest link. Do not let it be the lock.

If you need an inexpensive lock, perhaps consider a disc lock from Master. Amazon sells them for about $12+ shipping, so you probably can buy them locally for about the same. Disc locks in general are decently secure and resistant from attack.. I like the Abus Diskus 20/70, but it will cost you about $33 plus shipping.

Disc locks should work with the chain you have, are bolt cutter resistant, and not too heavy to carry. The cheap ones might not be pick resistant, but unless the person has power tools, a chain + disc lock will get someone to look elsewhere.

Of course, as budget increases, so do the locks available. I have used multiple Mul-T-Lock C series padlocks with a shrouded shackle for going on a decade with no intrusions.
