Buying New Is Not an Option

I've searched eBay, and Craigslist. I refuse to believe those are the only two places in which bicycles are for sale, I've browsed the for sale section here and cannot find a single thing. Does anybody know of anywhere else, [excluding local shops] that I can find bikes online used or with great sales.
Please help me find a new bike!
Thanks,
-

Thanks for the links, I have a feeling those sites will be better for accessories though, Ill just have to wait patiently until a proper deal arises.

Any hint what you're looking for? High-end bikes rarely appear in thrift shops, but I've found perfectly serviceable ones there for $10 to $50. My wife's commuter is a Specialized Hard Rock "roadified" with fenders and road tires, and my singlespeed was built from a mid-'80s Trek touring bike, a Reynolds 531 frame, I bought about 10 years ago for $35, I think it was. You may have to look for awhile to find what you need, but you're going to have to do that anyway.

Perhaps check pawn shops near university campuses? Around the summer and end of semesters, a lot of perfectly servicable bikes end up sold as students pack up and head to their permanent address.

One of my daughters mates put an advert in the local paper asking for a cheap bike for a College student. She had plenty of cheap bikes offered- mostly rubbish but took up an offer on a Kona Cindercone for £50 ($100). She was also given a couple of bikes- just to take them away and one of those was a 70's road bike that she is still riding round college.

stapfam, current exchange rates are at https://xe.com

Respectthewheel, what are you looking for?

There are garage sales and thrift shops. And garbage dumps.

Advertise in the paper?

Speaking of used bikes, are there good sites out there to learn to fit a bike without going to a bike shop? I'd feel sort of like a jerk having my partner go to a bike shop, take their time to get fitted, knowing full well he wants to buy used...

Police Auctions, held yearly, can be highly lucrative. If you know your bikes, that is. We got a bunch of good 3-speeds donated free to us. This was in 1986. We told the cops we were sending them overseas to provide medical-workers with transportation in the countryside. They liked that!

But we didn't tell them the country they were going to was Nicaragua - which the Federal government had embargoed from all aid-related supplies as Reagan's Contras were butchering the civilians in the countryside.

We got a letter from the president - Daniel Ortega at the time - thanking us for our contributions.

Great story, Panthers007.

Yeah, I forgot to mention police auctions. They are what started my hobby of fixing and restoring bikes. I discovered them rather by accident. Last year, the local police decided they couldn't pay the overtime to hold the annual auction on a Saturday morning, so they held it on a Wednesday morning. I went, and there was no one to bid against. I asked the officer what we should do. He told me to show him what I was interested in and make an offer. So I chose six bikes and offered him $100. He shrugged and said OK. Two of the bikes were old but high end and may have retailed for $1000 each, and I kept them. I gave two to my neighbor's 12 year old son. I gave the other two to needy people, such as a recovering alcoholic woman who has gotten her act together but doesn't have a car.

I've had some bike shops that would charge a nominal fee for fitting for a used bike if someone is up front with them. Of course, they want your business on a new bike, but if someone is honest with them, better $20 or so than no sale at all.

At the end of a school year, many bikes are for sale, real cheap, in college towns. My ride buddy was at his sons graduation in Boston, and couln't believe the deals. bk

Where would one find those deals in Boston and similar places? I'll be in Boston in a couple of weeks.

I notice the Boston craigslist has some of the best bike listings.
