Different Kind of Bike
This doesn't really qualify as a tandem bike, but would be a two-seater. I'm thinking heavier, stiffer frame, stronger wheels and tires...
My idea is to have a second seat post and saddle directly behind the main one. Pegs for passenger would have to be attached to frame via an extra tube on either side. The result is a two seat bicycle so you can bike around a girlfriend or kid. The frame would be heavier by probably 5 or 6 pounds. It's a thought. Remember, some of the first bicycles weren't tandems, but they did carry two people. It's a thought, anyway.

Very valid thread! I have a 90-year-old father-in-law, and we can't leave him alone anymore due to dementia setting in.
