Mavic Zxellium + Specialized Insoles
I went to my LBS this week to get a fit adjustment. My left knee has been hurting on the inside (towards the inner tube). The fitter had me step on the specialized foot imprint and depermined that my feet a bit flat. I mentioned this to my mother who confirmed that when I was a child she was told I have semi-flat or a small arch.
Anyhow, the Fitter recomended the red insoles to replaced the soles in the Mavic Zxelluims.
What has me concerned is that he mentioned that the "ERGO FIT 3D" sole that came with my shoes is just a generic sole and doesnt provide enough support for my feet. In my mind, how can a $400 shoe have a not so good sole? - how can a $50 insole be much superior? - what am I missing here?
Also, I have not riden in the new insoles, but my toes would get numb after a few miles with the shoe from the box. The fitter say that specialized in soles whould help with that (not knowing I was having that issue) and also would help with my front knee paint.
any comments? is it typical to buy a hi-end shoe and need aftermarket soles?

You have an unusual problem with your foot and NO insole will suit every type of foot. They will just make the insole for normal feet. So With your problem- you would need a special insole.

I don't have as high end of shoes as you, but highly recomend the Specialized BG insoles. I have been using them in all my shoes for a couple years now and know a couple of randoneurs who also swear by them.

The insoles will come with wedges that you can experiment with that may help with the knee pain.
