Dilated Veins

A warning to all cyclists. Ensure you cool down properly by 'taking it easy' for a few miles at the end of your ride, otherwise you risk enlarging your saphenous veins in the inside of your leg which fill up after stopping exercise suddenly. This happened to me and now my veins seem to be permanently enlarged. This may be classified as varicose veins, although they are not twisted so I am unsure whether they actually are.

I used to ride for 30 miles a day, 6 days a week if possible, but only 3 times a week most of the time, while I was at college. I've now stopped riding altogether, instead I go swimming a few times a week and walk a lot more. For about the past 3 weeks as I've been worried about my bulging veins. To reduce their appearance I've been taking cold baths during the day and raising my legs whenever possible. Not easy when I'm working! I've also bought a pair of compression socks although I've only had them for 2 days so I can't tell if their working properly yet.

Has anyone else suffered from this problem? If so, will it go away with time, or is it more permanent? Also what have you done to alleviate the problem?

I've always been very "veiny" on both my arms and legs and as i've improved my body it's become more and more pronounced ... my limited understanding of it is that the immediate "bulging" during/after exercise is a product of increased insulin in the body and over the long term it's an affect of your hearts ability to pump greater amounts of blood and your muscles requirements for greater amounts of blood ... i've never heard of any negative effects of it but :dunno:

tHE ONE IN MY CALFS AND THIGHS LAST AFTER EXERCISE AND ARE PROBABLY VARICOSE. i DON'T THINK IT'S NORMAL.

if they are varicose veins, there are a number of ways to treat it. sounds like you're on the right track as far as home remedies, but there are also a number of medical treatments that can be done (all of which i have no business recommending...talk to a doctor) to reverse it.

i'm not sure cycling would cause this. usually it's hereditary or due to an injury. if they are normal viens then it's perfectly normal that they swell after activity. my legs and calves do this all the time.

When I have a cold bath then I can walk around normally for a couple of hours before the veins in my calf and thigh begin to stick out again. I think the compression socks are a better long term bet. Already juist these two things have reduced their appearance. I am completely sure it is not a hereditary problem, it's due to excessive exercise, then stopping without cooling down I believe. Is it really possible to reverse the problem?

My veins stick out when I finish working out and late at night. I don't understand why they will buldge usually around 10:00 - 11:00 at night, which is cool, since I am out partying at that time.

Bulges at that time of the night can be associated with certain types pf partying :)
