Earlier last week my girlfriend ordered a Topeak MTX post mount rack and a Performance TransIt trunk bag. We tracked the purchase as we normally do, and were puzzled by why they only charged her $44 and change. We surmised that the trunk bag was back-ordered and she would have to wait. Flash forward to yesterday when the post office dropped off a package from Performance containing not only her rack but the matching Topeak Super Trunk bag!!!. This was the bag that she really had wanted, but we couldn't afford right now so we were forced to order the other one.

Turns out that the trunk bag she had ordered was discontinued and nobody caught in on the website. They could have told her to pick a different bag (to buy at our cost) but instead they gave her an $80 bag for free! We used a 20% off coupon code to boot!
Believe me when I say that a "Thank You" letter is definitely in the works.

Is that cool or what?

I made some comments on the Hot Deals board about my experience yesterday, but, I'll add my $.02 here as well.

I bought a Raza 3.0 from the Northbrook, IL store, which accepted my 20% digital coupon (which they weren't able to verify, but took me at my word). That in of itself was a huge plus in my book - but then they probably realize I'd just test ride their stock bikes, then order it online, then drop a boxed bike for them to build-up for me anyhow, so it worked out well.

The salesman I worked with was very easy to work with, and when I mentioned I had a Yakima roof rack that I was thinking about replacing with a hitch rack of some sort, he steered me back to just buying the new Q-Clips I'd need, even though they don't sell Yakima at their store.

Also, unlike some of the other LBSs in my area, when I told him what I was looking to spend and what bikes I was interested in, he didn't try to up-sell me and steer me to a different brand that they were trying to push that particular day, etc. Another plus is the lifetime adjustments (including truing) on the bike is major plus, and something the other LBSs don't offer - they do a 200 mile checkup then see-ya later (or maybe 50% off labor in the future, gee thanks).

One last thing I liked is for spending $20 for the team membership, I'm getting a check for like $80 to buy some more toys for the bike in a few weeks (a decent return on investment in my book).

I have yet to have a negative experience with Performance - either their local stores or via the web site. Customer service does seem to matter to them; they've always made it right if something went wrong. Their return policy (even clothes!) is second to none as well. Try that at most other LBS and you usually hear - "you put it on, you own it forever" (which is understandable, don't get me wrong).

Anyway, more love for Performance from me. I've also seen many $10 coupons from the numerous accessories I have purchased there. It's a nice touch and builds loyalty. Indeed, they seem to understand what cyclists need/want and 9 times out of 10, they provide it...
