Appears to me that the 'fashion' bikes they allude to are upright singlespeeds -- inoffensive to the eyes of the uninitiated, unlike the 'malevolent' roadie/fixie, or the 'anarchistic' mountain bike.

Whatever; as long as more people are parking their cars and pedaling, I don't care what they ride.

AND........

I never HAVE cared about fashion -- what sense does it make for something that looks good to suddenly be ugly in six months? And why, just because some androgynous Euro says so?

You don't need a $10K bike for it to be a fashion accessory. Get a beat up frame, turn it into a fixie, single speed it and put ridiculous handlebars on...or clean up some bike from 1970...or load it up with commuting gear...and it can be a fashion accessory.

For me, the fact that I have the bike and ride it pretty much everywhere says a lot about me, but it could be any road bike.

If my bike is far more capable than I am does that make it a fashion accessory? My impulse reason for buying it was that I had wanted a LeMond since high school.

I refuse to buy an ugly bike as I have to store all my bikes inside my apartment, so everyone coming in and out sees them sitting in my living room, so they're sorta a fashion accessory...lol

What's old is new again! It's just more expensive.
