Identify this Bike!
So I bought this bike from someone off Craigslist last week. It's a Specialized Hard Rock Hybrid, but the previous owner did not know what year...any one here have any idea?

I'm not seeing a photo, but if it's not too old you can go here. http://www.bikepedia.com/ Check out your components and see if they match up.
|
The picture isn't showing up because it's on a secure server at Northwestern U.
Can you post the picture on a public site like flickr or photobucket? You can also upload it directly to BF if it is less than 100k. |
As curbtender says; go to one of several sites and check the codes stamped into the DR.
Assuming Shimano, it should be two letters; these will indicate the year and month of manufacture. |
a Hard Rock hybrid? what make it a hybrid?
|
I thought a Hard Rock was a mountain bike.
|
Specialized made something around '91/92, taking the idea from the Bianchi Volpe but screwing it up. it was a 26' wheeled "cross" bike with drop bars. it did not go over well and the one we sold the owner ended up putting regular flat bars on it. I wish I could remember the name.

Components are telling also as fellow members stated. Stump Jumpers, Rock Hoppers... see a pattern here ? Spec. liked to name their models in this familiar way. |
the hard rock was the low end and there was at one time (pre 700c hybrid) a street stomper, more of a 'comfort' bike 26x1.5 non aggressive tires and basic shimano sis

If the OP ever decides to return, the bike can be narrowed down to exact year based on the color, with or W/O photo. For the range of years, pre or post '90 for example, the crank or other stuff needs to be listed. B. Girl has the older models well evaluated and it would make a good all-around bike IMO.

Sorry for the delay in response, guys. Here's a photo of the bike:

It's Shimano...and that's about all I know about the bike!
|
1987 or 1988 ... virtually identical ...Both years had those parts and that color "aqua'...
the only significant diferance was the wheel; 1987 had Weinman.. 1988 had Araya. Shifter was a slightly different model and the saddles were dif. but your saddles been changed. a particurly nice bike, Heavy Duty, DB CHROMO, straight-up rig... very strong. |

I agree there is nothing 'hybrid' about it it is a Hardrock with maybe a bit thinner tire good all around entry level ATB. not really what IMHO would be a MTB I do not believe these had ChroMo forks
PSSST: *whisper* little tip always take atleast (and display) one pic from the drive side. some of these guys can spot a cheap riveted crankset a mile away *giggle* |
Thanks for the help, guys. I know that the saddle is new and the shifters may have been replaced...
Also, I've been looking for the serial number on the bike, but can't find it. Any thoughts? |
Serial can be found on the underside of the bottom bracket.
