Rack suggestions

I drive a Buick Regal LS and my DH currently drives a Chevy Lumina APV (van). We are looking for a rack that will work on both so we don't have to get 2 racks. We won't be using 2 at the same time.

Here is the problem. I have not been able to find one that will fit both vehicles unless I put on a hitch. I am not opposed to this idea. Does anyone know if 1) there is a maker that has one for both (the van's back door is glass on top) or 2)can a hitch be put on the regal? Thule and Yakima both recommend a roof rack for the van. Can you see it? I am 5'4" I would need a ladder to get the bikes off.

If you can help me, or direct me were to ask about a hitch for the regal I would appreciate it.

I personally would go with a hitch rack. You can put one on a Regal but the only problem is that it might only be a 1-1/4" receiver as opposed to a 2". A 1-1/4" receiver will probably work okay for lighter racks that can accept only one or two bikes but you won't be able to load it up too much. Pay careful attention to the weight of both the rack and the bikes. Obviously, whatever you do, if you want to interchange between the two vehicles, you'll need to have the same size receiver on both vehicles.

My question to you is why bother? Since it seems you're okay with a trunk-rack (I have seen some used on minivans too - check the Saris racks), why not get one for the Regal and when using the minivan, fold down the seats and transport the bikes inside?

We thought of that, but when you put camping gear in there, or my DH's ref's gear, there is not enough room for one bike. Actually, there is only room for 1 bike as it is.

Why not a roof rack? The Saris racks require only different roof-edge clips for different cars (well, actually, they may not be compatible length-wise). I'm guessing Thules and Yakimas work similarly.
