Go to your LBS and ask them for one of the boxes that the bikes they receive are shipped in. Bring the mechanics a six pack of beer a little before closing and I feel sure they'd give you one.

Beer isn't necessary. I have 22 of them in the storeroom that I'd almost pay someone to take away....

Hmmmmmmmm, I use cardboard when I am under the car or truck, while working on motorcycles, lawnmowers, and, under my bike when cleaning it in the house ----- the LBS is pretty close, and I'll bet that cardboard box opens up pretty large......

Christmas time to boot - I'll bet they have lots......

Don't forget all of the little packing bits: the brace for the front fork ends and the plastic gizmo's that fit over the axle ends. If the manufacturers use them when they ship bikes, they're important.

Another good clue is to look at a bike still in the box to see how they do it. The forums are full of threads about shipping damage. When I had my own shop, however, I received over 1,000 new bikes via UPS with zero damage claims. ZERO. A proper packing job makes a big difference.

I'm confused. You're shipping a bike you don't own?

I was trying to help you out bro.

I should have specified 'good beer'. Go for dark like Left Hand Milk Stout or Duck Rabbit Porter; none of that Steele Reserve crap.

Sounds like he's trying to figure out how much it's going to cost to get the bike to him.

I agree he is doing the sellers leg work in figuring out shipping. $40- 50 for a professional packing and 40 - 60 shipping. if it is an expensive bike and the seller does not normally ship bikes spring for a professional packing.

My lbs has bike boxes for rent. Maybe check around to see? Otherwise, yes, take a box from your lbs. I have been told Trek boxes are best for shipping but can't verify that.
