A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has been impaled on a star picket after crashing a trail bike into a fence on a property south-west of Dalby early on Christmas morning.
A RACQ Careflight spokesman Brian Russell said the boy had crashed the trail bike into a fence on the property this morning, dislodging a star picket which stabbed the boy just below his ribcage.

He said the star picket exited through the child's belly button.

"He was on an old trail bike riding down a gravel driveway when the bike came out from under him,'' he said.

"Both the boy and the bike slid down and hit a wire fence, dislodging one of the star pickets in the fence which has penetrated his abdomen by the pointy end first.''

The boy is being treated in an ambulance at the scene, and will be flown to Brisbane later today. He is stable condition.

The trail bike is not believed to have been a Christmas present for the child.

They didn't call it a mountain bike, so this may have been a motorcycling accident. Still... Ow!

woah! that's happening in 23 minutes! that's like...the future! scary...

also, i'd bet trail bike means motorcycle. still sucks!

That's the wonder of time zones. When a soccer game is played in England, you've got 5 hours to bet on a sure thing before time catches up with it in the U.S. (If it happens in Australia, it happens the day before it happens) :)

For the benefit of the rest of the world: a "trail bike" is an off road motorbike, RACQ is a service primarily for motorists who break down in queensland. Not sure why they were involved.

Looks like the medical/rescue aircraft (Careflight) was sponsored by RACQ. If it was a remote area (don't know this town, I'm a southerner like you) they would have used a helicopter or flying-doctor type aircraft to transport the patient in preference to a long rough drive on the road.
