New 11 Speed Shimano IGH Anounced, SG-S700
Today Shimano Europe announced a new 11 speed IGH with a 409% overall range.
- 8 steps of 13% and 2 of 17%
- Oil Bath Lubrication
- Disc brake compatible standard
- Weight about 1600 Grams
Internals are all new and use helical gears if I understand the Babelfish translation of the German web site correctly. Also the new rapidfire shifter will allow changes of more than one gear at a time apparently.
I like the oil bath lubrication like has been used by the Rohloff hub for years. The 409% range and relatively even steps between gears are also attractive and should be superior to the Shimano 8 speed design.

This is very good news. I would wait for at least two years before buying one. Shimano needs time to work out the bugs just like the Nexus 7 was replaced by the much superior Nexus 8 Red band.
There's no question they are going after the Rohloff market at probably half the price.

A great day for cyclists who like IGHs.

With the oil bath lubrication on the new Nexus 11 hopefully it will have good enough seals so that water intrusion will not be an issue.

When you say reputable are you referring to the Canadian bike maker who claimed he was coming out with a Rohloff killer hub after having a fight with Rohloff? So far as I know that one never made it to market. So far as I know Rohloff is reputable. Their high prices are primarily due to manufacture in Germany in quite limited numbers compared to Shimano or SRAM hubs.

Good point. One thing that you can do with the current Shimano hubs, depending on whether or not you use continuous housing runs, is add a quick disconnect to the cable such as some people use with frames with S&S couplers installed. I have a pair of Rohloff quick disconnects I am going to install on my Alfine shift cable. Should be easy for me to do as the cable routing I am using includes runs of open cable w/o housing.
