Backpack or Frame bag?
Ok, so Ive been riding a Mountain Bike these past few years along with all my goods in a backpack (mainly because I had to use a hydro pack due to no mount area on bike). Now ive gone to a lighter Road Bike, and have significantly reduced my load by ditching the hydro pack and mounting a water bottle to the bike, and have the following cargo to carry now;
a house key, wallet, Blackberry, foldout Allen Wrenches, spare tube & tire levers, CO2 pump w/ carts... Its now overkill having so few items in my pack, so im wondering if I should goto a frame bag? Dont know if everything would fit tho and If I get a bag its gotta go on the frame not the saddle... I have room for my wallet and phone in my riding jersey... Any recommendations? What do you do when riding? Bike mounted bags or backpack? |
I use a frame (nashbar) and saddle (smallish Jandd) bag to carry a tube, 3 levers, spoke wrench, phone, keys, ID, snack, multi-tool, $20, and a beer.
Without the beer the frame bag is plenty, but that's sacrilege. |
I've never transported beer with a bike, but maybe I should.....
I ride with everything you do plus one more tube, a chain tool, a hand pump, maps, a trash bag, and ....probably something else - haven't looked in there in a while. I use a saddle bag on the rear rack though - I gave up backpacks 3 years ago and would never go back. I will also sometimes carry stuff in my cargo pockets - I remember not liking to carry things in the back of a jersey - but haven't worn one in so long I'm not sure. |
Ya, Im pretty burnt out on packing.. Unless Im actually packing a load down a trail to the river on my Mt. bike im really done using it... Ill go check out some Frame bags and see if I find one that will work!

Another option is a handlebar bag if you need more space. I use a wedge bag on my road bike but I like the handlebar bag if I need more space.

Why are you against a saddle bag? a good one will hold everything you have with room to spare.

This is the bag I prefer. The little ones that most LBS stock are kind of a joke.

Put everything but the phone and key in a seat bag. The phone and key should go in your pocket.
