Do you stop for school busses?

Today I was riding then a bus came. I had to stop for the bus and that seemed forever. Took the bus 5 mins just to pull in and let the kids off then leave. I dont imagine messenger bike people stop for busses.

Do you stop for school busses?

I don't imagine anyone but you would wait 5 minutes for a school bus when it is quite sensible and legal to dismount, walk the bike past the stopped school bus and continue, a process that takes less time than it does to read this sentence.

+1. You have to stop if you are a vehicle but not if you are a pedestrian.

slipknot0129 02-17-10 08:09 PM

I didnt know that.

CNY James 02-17-10 08:30 PM

funny that I have wondered the same and never considered walking the bike as an option.

Never been in the situation but wondered how to proceed if the situation presented itself...

aMull 02-17-10 08:51 PM

Just hop eon the sidewalk or walk the bike. Funny that you actually stayed and waited

Nermal 02-17-10 09:14 PM

Sure. Then you get back on, take off, and get right hooked.

Not if you get hit by a comet first:rolleyes:

Mr. Beanz 02-17-10 11:44 PM

Yes I stop. Never had a bus take more than 2 or 3 mintutes. I obey the law while riding so that when I go on a forum and whine about cyclists' rights, I don't sound like a hypocrite.:D

Same in the car, I stop. Sadly enough, I've seen city buses run right by school buses with red lights and stop sign extended.

Artkansas 02-18-10 09:06 AM

I do as a matter of habit, but I had to this morning.

I was coming down a hill at about 30 with a green light at the bottom. Then, suddenly a school bus does a right on red from the side street and blocks my lane. I came very close to going right under it.

macwild 02-18-10 09:17 AM

Yes always. I usually only see them on a two lane black top near our house and they only take a minute or two. I'm not in that big of a hurry.

Abso-freaking-lutly. If it looks like it's gonna take a while I dismount and walk, but most of the time I just wait.

Adam

Of course. If we expect to be treated equally as road users, then we must obey the same laws.

:popcorn:rolleyes:

By whom? The bus is stopped, and cars aren't allowed to proceed by it until the bus doors close.

You're kidding? The bus stops. After awhile, it goes. It does not look to the right before turning right. It is too busy and important for stuff like that.

wrafl 02-18-10 04:25 PM

Yea I stop and wait for the clear signal then proceed. As some suggested, maybe I could dismount and walk the bike across not a bad idea considering that the bus could take as much as 5 minutes or so to load and unload school kids. OTOH, that 5 minute wait allow you to rest.

GriddleCakes 02-18-10 05:49 PM

I stop for busses, red lights, stop signs, and crossing guards too. The law is pretty explicit about it. I don't ride like a bike messenger and I don't drive like a taxi driver; it's incredibly rude, often illegal, and doesn't really get me there a whole lot faster anyway.

To me it's more about not being an ******* than the "illegal" part. I don't entirely agree that traffic laws should be applied to bicycles exactly as they are applied to cars, but that's another story.

As many people have said, just get off and walk. A bike & rider have a magical ability to turn into a pedestrian, while cars do not have that luxury.

Alternatively, I've also turned around and rerouted down a different block.

DX-MAN 02-18-10 07:13 PM

Sometimes, it's a good opportunity to practice trackstands.

But yeah, I wait.

This one, though, has got me confused; yesterday, a school bus stopped in front of my driveway. I was walking from the city bus stop, got to the flashing "STOP" sign on the school bus, AND THE DRIVER BLARED THE HORN AT ME -- I WAS F'N WALKING, FOR GAWD'S SAKE!!

Breaking the law and looking like ******* kind of go hand in hand, don't they? I agree that just applying motorized vehicle laws to bikes less than ideal, but it's what my city has done and I'm not in the habit of picking and choosing which laws I want to follow and which I don't. At least in regards to traffic and conduct in public places.

I think that public perception of cyclists effects our ability to ride safely and harassment-free, as well as our ability to enact changes in the traffic code that benefit our user group.

solveg 02-18-10 08:02 PM

Think of the good example you were to the school kids! OK, you could have walked....but maybe by some weird twist of faith some kid emulated you and some disaster was averted!

Life is mostly how you choose to look at it, right?

Little Darwin 02-18-10 08:47 PM

I would stay behind the bus, for the first stop, and then potentially walk around it at the next stop.

I haven't been riding behind a bus, but I have twice been caught behind a bus that was the slowest bus EVER.

About once every block the bus stopped, and a child got on with a parent. I assume that the parent then executed a security search of all the other students, at which point, all students on the bu7s did a security screening of the new passenger. Once everything was secure, the parent led the children in singing all the verses of "The Wheels on the Bus" and then said a personal good-bye to all of the students, then wandered off the bus.

The wheels on the bus go round and round.
round and round.
round and round.
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
all through the town!

The people on the bus go up and down.
up and down.
up and down.
The people on the bus go up and down,
all through the town!

The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep.
beep, beep beep.
beep, beep, beep.
The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep.
all through the town!

The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish.
swish, swish, swish.
swish, swish, swish.
The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish,
all through the town!

The signals on the bus go blink, blink, blink.
blink, blink, blink.
blink, blink, blink.
The signals on the bus go blink, blink, blink,
all through the town!

The motor on the bus goes zoom, zoom, zoom.
zoom, zoom, zoom.
zoom, zoom, zoom.
The motor on the bus goes zoom, zoom, zoom,
all through the town!

The babies on the bus go waa, waa, waa.
waa, waa, waa.
waa, waa, waa.
The babies on the bus go waa, waa, waa,
all through the town!

The parents on the bus go shh, shh, shh.
shh, shh, shh.
shh, shh, shh.
The parents on the bus go shh, shh, shh,
all through the town!

The mommy on the bus says, I love you.
I love you, I love you
The daddy on the bus says, I love you, too.
All through the town.

devianb 02-19-10 12:56 AM

I don't stop for buses. Most of the time I see them so far ahead I can make a detour. If I was right behind the bus and it stopped, then I would.

Yup. I can't disagree with that.
