NYC bicycle parking...where?

i have decided to buy a cheap bike to commute to the train station with. i will not be able to bring the bike on the train with me, so i need to park it somewhere along the PATH train system (new york side) for at least 8 hours each day. does anyone have any recommendations on where a safe place to park would be for this length of time?

Timmhaan,

As a former NYC'er I would not park a bike old or new at either Penn Station or the former Trade Center Station (if it's been re-opened). When you come back your liable to find the bike and the rack gone.

I would talk to some of the Parking Garage Attendants in the area to see if for a small fee (basically tip money) they will let you park. Otherwise if there are any apartment buildings with Door Men, I would talk to them to see if I could work the same deal.

Lock it in front of Gotham Bikes, they got a rack outside, I'm not saying it's the safest thing in the world but if you have a big lock, at least someone'll notice someone carrying around a 6ft bolt cutter. Plus they're right next to the 1,2,3,9 station.

You can also get a tiny foldable bike. Carry it like a briefcase.
I thought you worked and lived in nyc.

Believe it not, I used to park the my $330.00 Dahon Piccolo at the Path train station (Journal Square) a couple of years back and just take a van into New York City! My bike was attacked a couple of times but I used the Kryptonite New York Chain so it never got stolen. I'm not too sure I would do that today as I see lots of bikes vandalized on those racks.

I've seen some people bring folding bikes on boad the Path system. In fact, I remember seeing someone bring a 20 inch folder that had an elecric motor on board the Path during rush hour! The only bikes allowed on Path during rush hour are folders so don't even think about taking a full size bike.

If you decide to bring a folding bike like Dahon, here's how to do it. The bike is fairly heavy so you would not want to carry it across the platform. HOWEVER. You have to have it folded or the police won't allow you downstairs. Here's how to do it. You fold the bike in half and keep the handlebar up. Then roll the bike on the front wheel using the handlebar. Simple...

Good luck.

Yeah, depends on where you're taking the PATH from. Around Penn Sta., there are a lot of garages you could maybe park the bike for a small monthly fee. Do you know anyone who works at a building around where you'd be parking? Do they have a corner in their office you could park it?

I work by Macy's but can bring my bike inside, so I'm not really sure where to suggest parking for you.

If you already bought a cheap bike, sell it now and get a folding bike. You will be able to bring it on the train with you but it has to be a folder. www.dahon.com

P.S. Look at the Boardwalk 6
