Toe Clip Compatible Pedals
 

After work this evening, I dropped by my LBS and picked up some MKS Toe Clips. After mounting them on my bike I took it out for a test ride and found that the straps move around too much on the pedal; even slipping off one side of the pedal as I brought my foot in and out.

I'm riding an '09 KHS Urban Xpress with the stock KHS Treking [sic.] pedals. There does not appear to be any way to thread the strap through the pedal; so my question is this: Are there compatible and non compatible pedals for toe clips?

I would have asked the guys at the shop but it never even occurred to me.

Yes. Toe clips work on some pedals but not others.

There does need to be some kind of slot or other structure for the strap to go thru or under or around.

I always ran the straps through the back half of the pedal. I had the end of the strap running between the roller and the blade so it was pointed up. That made it easier to reach down to tighten. To loosen you just had to flick it outwards.

I think I'm going to get these pedals from MKS. This probably seems like a silly question, but I can't tell from the picture if the support arms (the silver, up and down pieces of the "H") are hollow or not. I'm sure they should be so you can pass your strap through, but I wanted to be sure before I placed an order. Anyone know for sure?

Those pedals are highly recommended by lots of folks. The larger image makes the open slots a bit easier to see. The straps pass through the slots away from the front of the clip - you shuld twist the strap a couple of times between the inner and outer slot.

Awesome- what does the twist do?

Keeps the strap from moving when you pull on the end to tighten it snug. Or, when you loosen it, too.
(As I recall - has been maybe 15 years since I used toe clips)

Yeah, what he said. if you can't find them locally, Rivendell (www.rivbike.com) stocks three or four types. i have about 12,000 miles on some MKS old-style pedals from there, and i like them a lot.
I can't tell from the description exactly what the problem is with your current pedals, but could you secure the straps with a sheet metal screw or something? Just drill a little hole and run a tiny self-tapping screw into it, through the strap? Or do something with a zip tie?
If you buy new pedals, thread the strap through one side and give it a twist before you run it out the other side. That will keep it from slipping.

EDIT: Sorry for repeating information from another post--didn't notice it when i skimmed the thread. Those MKS pedals are the same ones I have on two bikes. Cost about $40 from Rivendell, probably less elsewhere (I like Riv and try to support it, even if it costs a little more). No problems ever.
