Which Bike For Me?
I am going to buy a bike finally, I hope. I would like some input/opinions if you all would please be so inclined to offer me some.
Here’s my background: 2009 was my first year of any kind of biking since childhood. I did the Jordanelle Sprint Triathlon and the Alta Canyon Rec Center’s I-Can-Tri mini sprint in Sandy, UT. I loved doing both of them. I trained on an 80’s Reflex mtn bike with road tires on it, and used a friends’ Cervelo road bike for the races.
For 2010 I would like to do the Jordanelle Olympic distance tri AND the Xterra Off-Road Tri in Ogden, UT. I have only been mountain biking one time, but I LOVED it, more than road biking even.
My dilemma is that I don’t know what kind of bike to get; road or mtn? I think I will get more overall out of a mtn bike because I don’t like training on busy roads, BUT I don’t know if I would want to ride a mtn bike [with road tires] in an Olympic distance tri. My budget is low, less than $500. So what do you think? Thanks in advance!!!

well as far as a mtn bike goes the posture is more upright than a road bike but at the five hundred dollar level i don't think you would find a road bike, i might be wrong. as far as i know the only choices you have with that kind of budget are hybrids and mtn bikes.
the tires are everything. if you use road tires i don't know if it matters much what you buy hybrid or mtn style bike.
