Easy to grab shifters, brake calipers and QR skewers. Cut the chain and you can get both derailleurs. Shimano and SRAM make it pretty easy to grab cranks and pedals from many gruppos. Saddle, and seatpost are also easy targets. I'd probably leave the stem and bars behind unless they were really valuable; removing them makes the bike look different and your appropriations may be discovered sooner as a result...

Yup - anything 105 or above is primo thief target material to ebay. You can strip these indefensible components from a bike in less than 30 seconds.

Bike chop shop just busted in Seattle -- guy and his girlfriend were living in a storage unit, allegedly stealing bikes, stripping them, selling bikes and parts on Seattle CL:

I was about to buy a set of lock nuts for front and rear wheel, seat headset, but I didn't think about all the stuff you just mentioned. Man, I guess the tarp really is the best idea. LOL!

well, if you've gone that far... might as well take the stem and fork.

best solution is to attach parts that are not worth the effort.
cheap, no name stuff that has a bunch of nicks and scratches, chipped paint, whatever.

Not worth the effort. A used stem is next to worthless. Forks might be worth money, especially suspension MTB forks, but you'll end up with a bigger payout if you focus on shifters, brakes, and drivetrain components. Quick to remove, easy to sell, and you can pack quite a lot of them in a small amount of space.

Nobody's going to bother grabbing your Sora components if you're locked next to a bunch of bikes with 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace!

or barcons, or DT shifters.

sadly, I suspect my veloce levers are too attractive, even though they cost less than 105 levers.

I build golf clubs, your epoxy will last about 45 seconds under my microtorch!

i have used plastic wood too. it has been an effective deterrent, i think. most thieves travel with cutters or maybe an allen key or two, but a torch?

FWIW, a microtorch is very small, it's about the size of a sharpie and it puts out a flame like a cigar torch. If a thieve knew that cyclists are putting epoxy and solder into the allen key holes for security, it would make sense that they would carry one. they cost about $10 at home depot.

Chains and U locks are intended to deter amateur bike thieves from stealing a locked bike. If its something a professional thief wants, its good as gone. No security system will deter a pro.

I use ABUS locks...from my motorcycle days. There was one valiant try but they did not manage to cut the steel shell. I got mine from www.lockitt.com- not cheap at all but am thinking of getting a longer one now- to lock two bikes to my bike rack. Still, dropping $150 plus on a lock takes some mental work.

I'm moving this over to the General cycling Forum. Should do a better job of spreading the word.

Have you ever heard of anybody doing this? It is just an urban myth... the thermal inertia of the lock means you would need a LOT of liquid nitrogen and be able to get it into the center key way lock before it warmed up in the air... a tricky task since it is boiling and could burn the thief badly. how do you unlock the lock pawls after you have shattered it and it is like -100 degrees c... personally i wouldn't worry about liquid nitrogen it is far too hollywood when you can take a portable reciprocating saw and a carbide tipped blade.

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, and everybody saw how thick those chain links were... if he had installed a cheater bar it would be even faster. The best security is a THICK u-lock tight enough that the theif can't fit a hydraulic pocket jack in between it. Prepare to have your frame vandalized in return for your defiance.

For wheels, pinheads can be defeated by using a pair of locking pliers and clamping them on tightly to the outer casing... the pitlocks are better... i might get a pitlock headset lock... this might be good for preventing fork theft.

Edit: Also don't leave your chain near the ground... wrap the excess tight and high. This man's attack requires his whole body weight on one end of the lever.

Does that mean that you stole someone else's bike and took it home along with yours? If you did. shame on you. What cyclist does that to another cyclist. Not fair! If you dodn't take someone else's bike, then sorry for the allegation.

You can buy a solid oxy/ace torch the size of a pack of cigs.No lock or chain will stop a cutting torch.I can oxidize ANYTHING you can lock your bike with in 30 secs or less.

If somebody wants your bike bad enough,it's gone.
