Help choosing a bike???

I am currently in the market for a bike. Ive been looking at hybrids because i plan to ride on the street and hard dirt trails. Ill probably only ride twice a month, so im not looking to spend a lot of money (budget = $300 - $400). So far, I have looked at the Trex 7200 '04 and the Raleigh C40 '04. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First you need to decide if you want a road bike, comfort bike , hybrid or a mountain bike. You need to declare how you intend to ride it. Will you be riding fairly hard or do you just want to stroll around the neighborhood.

Also what is your age? I am not familiar with the Raleigh but the Trek is a hybrid with narrow tires. It would be great on pavement and maybe on dirt but the tires are not made for much beyond that. If you ever decide to get on any rougher trails or unmaintained roads, you will be better off with a mountain bike.

You also need to decide how far you will be going at a certain time. There are 2 comfort ranges. If you are going to go for a 30 minutes ride comfort or hybrid are great if you are going out for 2 hours then comfort bikes are misnamed.

Im 26 and will mainly be riding paved and hard packed dirt trails. In order to go mountain biking I would have to drive a good distance (approx. 1.5 hours) so I dont see myself doing that often enough to justify a mountain bike. I will probably be riding for 1-2 hours at a time.
