Moonlight Ramble?

Did anyone on this forum attend the Moonlight Ramble in St. Louis, Missouri tonight? If you did, then I hope you had a good time. If not, then you missed out. This was the first time I've ever been to one. They've been going on for 40 yrs. It was neat to see so many cyclists in one place at one time. There was a festival-like atmosphere with lots of different people, bikes, and entertainment to take in. The bicycle route wound its way through downtown St. Louis through the Central West End into Clayton and back, ending at the City Museum. The Police and Event Organizers were stationed along the way to guide traffic and mark the route. I have to say the Police were very nice and did a great job. There were no problems that I was aware of, and everyone I talked to was friendly. I took the 20 mile route and enjoyed every minute of it. I'll have to go next year, too.

I've been a few times, but I didn't go this year. Just not my thing.

Frankly, when I have gone, I haven't enjoyed it nearly as much as you sem to have. I hate all of the standing around before the start and all of the SLOW riding among a hugh SLOWLY moving crowd of people many of whom only seem to ride once a year and SLOWLY at that. It seems to me like whenever you put a big group of bike riders in a relatively car-free enviornment, half of them don't think there should be any rules at all and zig-zag unpredictably, albeit SLOWLY, all over the place, like my 3 year old grandsons on their tricycles (about the same speed too). The boys also have a tendency to STOP suddenly without warning to look back for their girlfriends who are even SLOWER than they are. Did I mention how SLOWLY you have to ride the whole time? I hate that. Like I said, just not my thing - maybe if I still drank alcohol I'd feel differently.

I did the ride a few years ago and I agree with Retro.

Large group rides are no fun for me because I have to spend too much time avoiding other riders. Now make that a large group ride in the dark with poor lighting, crappy streets, and along a boring route, and it becomes no fun at all.

But I can't deny that some people enjoy it immensely. My dislike probably reflects my anti-social tendencies.
