How to install a water bottle cage without the holes?

I have a 83 Motobecane and I can't mount a water bottle cage because there aren't any holes in the frame to screw in the cage.

I really need water on my rides, How can I mount a cage on this frame?

Thanks very much!

i had this problem on one of my older bikes and used small hose clamps
to hold them on -- worked out ok

I cut the excess band off hose clamps and then put heat shrink on the part of them that won't go through the screw. Protects the paint and looks much cleaner. bk

Small hose clamps work very well. Just wrap a layer or two of electrical tape on the tubing before you mount them. The clamp hides the tape, and the tape protects everything from scratches.

I put some old tube behind a cage and used some zip ties.

It's been over a year now and it's held up fine.

hose clamps or zip ties bith can be found at hardware stores. when I used zip ties I use 4 - 2 on top and 2 on bottom. why no, they don't weigh anything

I put a pair of bottle cages on my vintage steel ride by just drilling holes in the frame and putting stainless steel self taps right in. Took a few minutes and has worked fine for years. I put a little sealant on the threads prior to driving them in. I'm not partial to the hose clamp look..just a personal choice.

zip ties come in all colors now and it's easy to find something that either blends in or matches somehow.

This is a common problem for folding bikes -- there are quite a few without mounting holes (or using them will interfere with folding), and the frame tubing and seatpost are often an unusual diameter, making it hard to mount accessories. I used to just strap a bottle to the rear carrier with bungee cords.

You can use a Klickfix adapter to install a water bottle cage to an old bike without water bottle mounts.

Your LBS, and X-mart have universal mount bottle cages. On my Motobecane I mounted the bottle cage on the handlebars.
