Advice please...

Hello...new forum member here...

I have been browsing the forums mildly, and figure I'd register and actually take part!

I need a suggestion, and maybe a point in the right direction.

I'm really bad about getting into a new hobby and not sticking with it. I decided to purchase a road bike to begin my "new temporary hobby" (purchased a Novara Strada, approx. $1,100.00, has carbon fiber fork, Mavik wheels, Shimano 105 set, etc...)

Well, I love the sport. I'm currently riding about 75 mi on Sat and Sundays, and about 20 mi every other day M-F. I'm also on a weight-training and cardio program, and it seems to be working out quite nicely. I can remember my first ride about 6 months ago, where I couldn't get down the street and back without feeling "winded". :D

Well, I've come into some "bonus monies", and want to upgrade to a prime machine that I can eventually compete with. I have looked into 2 bikes: The Trek 2300, and the the Trek Madone 5.2 (both 2005 models).

I figure that if I'm going to invest, I might as well spend on the "front end" and not worry about upgrading anytime soon. Is it worth the extra $500-600 for the 5.2?

Also, if you have any other bike suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. I am also going to keep my Strada for a "basic training bike" or for days that it might rain, etc.

Thanks a bunch for your input.

what about spending less money and upgrading the Strada? Sounds like a pretty decent bike already.

Get a second set of wheels and tires, but go for an arrangement that doesnt make you fiddle with gearshift settings when you swap wheels.

Basically, it's a great starter bike, and a more than ample trainer.

But I want to get another bike "on another level" that I can grow into as far as competition worthiness.

But, if I did decide to upgrade, what would you suggest first??? Changing the 105's out to DuraAce? New wheels? This is where my "newbiness" shines through.

Thanks for your reply though. I definitely need some direction as far as this is concerned, and my local bike shop (naturally) is pushing me towards the 5.2....of course, they want to make a sale, I'm sure.
