Fenders?

Got a new Specialized Sequoia and a great deal from my LBS. I'm happy. However, they told the that (a) one couldn't put fenders on a Sequoia and (b) I don't really NEED them anyway.

Then I went for a ride in the rain. I want fenders. Anyone know of any way to put them on a Sequoia? To complicate matters, I also asked the LBS to put larger, knobbier tires on the bike (30s), so that leaves that much less room for fenders. Seemed like a trivial nicety until I went for the ride in the rain. Now I really want them. Recommendations would be much welcome.

(a) There's plenty of clearance on a Sequoia for fenders -- at least, there is on my 2003 Sequioa.

(b) I'm sure I don't NEED fenders either, but I have them on both bikes because I WANT them on there. :D

Recommendations? Find a different LBS? Oh, and probably 45mm fenders for your knobby tires.

Round the tyre -kind, close-fitting fender is better than a plastic flap attached to seatpost. But even the plastic flap is better than nothing.

there is a larger section at this site of different shapes. I would thin ONE of them would work for you.

Some people think fenders are unnecessary weight or that they
spoil the looks of a bike. FWIW I feel that fenders, properly
fitted, are worth the tiny bit of weight and complete a bikes
looks. Only indoor track bikes don't need fenders in my book.

That said ALL of my bikes have fenders of some type.

Thanks to all -- we're all in agreement. Apparently there are two supposed problems with fenders on a Sequoia. One is availability of room due to the larger added tires (30s). The other is the configuration and arrangement of the brakes. Either or both are presenting challenges. Maybe the LBS will overcome them, but I wanted to have this dialogue in the forum to ascertain whether it was possible/practical/feasible so I would know whether I should push back if they indicate it can't be done.

You can get much of the functionality of a rear fender from a solid-deck rear rack. Mine takes care of the skunk stripe up my back in the wet. I've seen splash plates that can be attached to the bottom tube near the crank that should help with stuff kicked up by the front tire.
