World's most expensive bikes?
Bike forums folks,
I'm a bike lover and a technology reporter for Forbes Magazine. Ahead of the Tour de France, I'm putting together a story (a bit outside my normal beat) on the world's most expensive bicycles. I was hoping that you all might have ideas. I'm looking for specific examples of ultra-pricey bikes, but also trends in high end cycling technology and ideas about which might be the most expensive bikes that will be ridden in the TDF this year. If you have any ideas about who might be a good source for this story, I'm definitely eager to hear suggestions. If you'd prefer to email me directly, my work email is agreenberg@forbes.com. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Andy Greenberg |
It's always nice to see a cycling story in the main media. I am by no means an expert but the trend in pro-tour level bikes has been carbon fiber for the last five or more years. All of the major players in the TDF will have CF frames with CF forks, CF seat posts or integrated seat masts, CF wheels. The newest addition is the electronic shifting from Shimano - DI2. The complete bike (Frame, fork, grouppo and wheels) will be in the $15,000 range with some riding less expensive models - all must weigh more than 15 pounds - the uci limit. You will see lighter, more expensive bikes out on the road where there is obvioulsy no weight limit.
If you look at the time trial bikes from the tour of Switzerland you'll see integrated headset/forks. They will also be in the $15,000 or less range. Bikes in the tour this year will be - Specialized, Trek, Eddy Merckx, Giant, Wiler, BMC, BH, Orbea and some others. |
Now Gary, that's what I call an answer.

My friend had a Univega that cost him about $50,000. Whilst doing a drunken wheelie at the beach, he crashed & tore a tendon in his knee. Unemployed for a year while he healed.

Storck Fascenario 0.7IS frame w/Shimano DI2 groupset and some Lew wheels or something. The frame and fork alone are $8,550.
