I've just changed all the chains on the bikes in the house, and now I have no idea what to do with the old, dirty, worn out ones.

What do you usually do with them?

Classic answer right there

Short of making decorative art out of them it's about all they're good for though.

Using a Dremel, I grind and shape each link into a delicate flower setting for gemstones and then sell the jewelery to hipsters on Etsy.

Actually a neighbor of mine does something similar to this. She breaks them into wrist-size loops, sometimes polishes or lacquers some of the links, and sells them at a couple of local farmers' markets for $5 to $15. She does the polishing in a rock polisher, one of those tumbler things. she's a fairly well-known artist locally, and sets them out with her other stuff. She says they sell pretty well.
I toss mine in the recycling bin.

Mine go in the recycle pile that gets hauled in once a year or whenever the price of scrap goes up.

I used to make some killer windchimes from cutting up old rims and taking apart old freewheels.

You could fashion one into a hip necklace or choker.

Many bike shops will recycle them for you.

I hang them in the garage next to the old motorcycle chains & fork springs. Someday they'll all get unworn out.
