Another security issue
All these lock posts have me thinking about another security issue I saw a lot back when I worked in a shop in college (early 90’s): someone would come into the shop with all their brake and shifter cables cut and their stem (with bars and shifters) missing. Seems to be this security threat would is a lot worse these days given that everyone has gone to aheadsets and not only the stem but the fork (which could represent a lot of money if it were a suspension fork) could be pulled by loosening two or three bolts and cutting the cables.
Is anyone aware of any kind of locking bolt technology out there that might be used to better secure a stem to the steerer tube—something that requires a special allen key or something similar to locking lug nuts on a car wheel that would let me lock my bike up without worrying about my bars, stem, shifters, and fork getting nabbed? Cranks and pedals could be pulled in a matter of seconds too with so many cranks using self-extracting crank bolts these days. And please no rude comments about the newbie statuts. |

I tried silicone caulk on a whim - whole it does wonders for keeping rain out it pops out way too easy for my taste.
