2 bike storage
 

Need help finding a solution to storing 2 road bikes.

I have, umm, very little floor and wall space, the more compact, the better!

wallhangers? you could storage both bikes together, each other aside. Maybe something like this?

yeah, i was thinking wallhangers, but i have no empty walls, except a space above the headboard, and that just seems scary...

i definitely dont want to have them outside, but dont have enough floor space for freestanding or gravity racks either.

^^ This. I have a similar stand. It looks like it would be unstable, but it isn't.

Never done it myself but I've heard of the bath tub suggested for bike storage. That's space that you only use otherwise for a few minutes each day.

If you're looking for dorm room storage a common solution is to raise your bed up high enough to store your bikes underneath.

I like the bed idea, that might work...

this is only storage for one bike, but i have a 650 sq foot loft so real estate is precious. i bought a wall mounted bike rack, but mounted it to a bookshelf. you can't see from the pic, but there is just enough room between the shelf and the window to maneuver the bike into position after a ride. at first i was against having a bicycle chilling out in the living room, but as often as i use it, it seems second nature to me now

do you have the bookshelf off the wall alot? seems like the handlebars would get in the way.

actually i did have to back the book case off the wall 4 inches, but if i'd mounted the thing closer towards the shelf's front, i would have been fine

ahh gotcha.

that might work, but i dont really have any bookshelves tall enough...

if there was a way to store a bike behind a door, that might work, haha

The heights are staggered so that one bike's bars can tuck in under the other one's bars.

Bear in mind too that sometimes you have to give up one thing to get another. I gave up a corner reading chair, and wall space for a painting in order to get bike space.

haha, you might have given up a chair and wall space, but it looks like youve got a decent space for bike tool n' such! and bikes are art on their own, right?

The headboard on the bed?

Have you considered turning the bed around so your head is on the other end? When I was in college I hung my bikes off the light fixture at the end of my bed (not as scary as it sound, the lighting thing was a big wood thing, long for flourescent lights, very securely attached to the wall). I would never have hung them over my head, but I figured if they fell onto my feel while I was asleep it wouldn't be the end of the world (the bike never actually fell).

Those are the Locking Bike Trac from Saris. The loop for a U-lock makes them a special-order, commercial parking garage thing. I have to special order them at the LBS (about $80 each, +shipping, and boy are they heavy) and wait a couple of months for them to come in. But, I won't leave an unlocked bike home alone in my apartment. The only bike I ever had stolen was stolen from my locked storage bin in the locked basement at my old apartment. That won't happen to me again.

Less paranoid people will do just fine with the plain old ordinary Bike Trac from Saris. They're half the price and your LBS can order it from QBP.

I prefer the trac style to plain hooks because they keep wet tires off the wall.

I noticed that people lock their bikes inside too, it never even popped into my head to lock them when theyre in the other room, but it makes me a little more paranoid seeing it all over the BF...

It's not the neighborhood so much as who has access to the building.

There are 46 units in the building, so that's 45 other tenants right now that I didn't have a chance to vet. If 5% of the population is a criminal, that's 2 tenants in my building. Plus everyone who's ever lived in the building before and maybe didn't return all their keys, or gave a key to their deadbeat boyfriend and didn't get it back when they broke up. Finally, the landlord gets to hire employees and contractors, not me. Who knows if he decided to give some felon a chance?

In fact, at the last place, where one of my bikes was actually stolen, we all suspect the painters. That landlord changed painting contractors because of it. But unless you're going bucks deluxe and hiring union painters, you can pretty much bet that they're all some combination of drunks, druggies and criminals. Landscapers too.

In any event, when that last bike was stolen, I had relied on the landlord's security. I actually thought about locking the bike to a drain pipe in the storage bin, and decided that was silly. A month later, the bike, and two boxes of parts, were gone. That's all they took. Left the electronics.

That's why I lock my bikes in my apartment.

I have a buck or two tied up in bikes, and I can only ride one at a time. That means three are home when I'm away. I won't leave them undefended.

Thieves will take anything that isn't locked down. I had a stainless steel weber gas grill stolen 2 years ago and Thule cargo box stolen 4 years ago.

Back to the OP, when I lived in an apartment, I would hang the bikes above sofas and on walls like art work.
