fan etiquette question
I have zero knowledge of bike culture - but a friend is riding this weekend in a MS ride (he emphasizes it is not a race) and my family would like to go surprise him and show support. Do we hang at the finish line with a poster and cheer? Or maybe find a spot on a tough hill to cheer him on? We don't want to embarrass him or do anything to distract him - we just have no idea what would please a cyclist. Thanks for your help.

if you know the route, plan to be on the middle of the steepest climb there is, and when you see him, cheer him and run along side him to the top like they do on the tour. i know this sounds sarcastic, but i'm being totally serious. it's cheesy, and stupid, and a cyclist will totally appreciate it. you can also write his name on the road in chalk.

+1! Haha-- It's especially cool when you can surprise him! I shocked the cr@p out of my wife when she ran a marathon in SF and it was perfect. (She stared at me for more than 10-seconds thinking, 'Whoa, there's a guy who looks exactly like my husband.") Then she cried, we quickly hugged, and she went on to beat her marathon PR.

Top of a climb some cool water in a fresh bike bottle , and maybe a cooling spray mist would be appreciated..

Maybe your friend would appreciate a few photo ops at key sections of bike route including finish. I once surprised a runner by showing up at key intersections of a marathon.
Those MS Rides usally have some large rest stops; provided your not in the way of rest stop volunteers or the cyclists, maybe you could meet there as well.

I've always liked it when people are there cheering me on at the finish line. I've done several centuries (early one's) where nobody was there and it was very melodramatic. Now I could care less, but when I did my first few, it was a big deal to me.

And while you are there, cheer on the other riders too. Many will ignore it, but many will appreciate it.
Also, you never know if there might be someone else you know (or will later meet) that is riding too.
Cowbells are definitely a favorite for cheering on riders.
I have been cheered on by people I didn't know, and it was definitely appreciated.

Those both sound really nice -- I wonder if you could meet your friend at a steep hill, then head over to the end to bring the beer at the end of the ride.

cheering is the best motivator. I dont know how or why but having support from spectators makes me feel inclined to perform harder so that their cheering isn't in vain. I'd pick a spot in the middle-end of the course, if a hill is there then that is a good spot. I also like the idea of bringing a bottle of water to hand off to him, just in case.

Wear long underwear with regular underwear on the outside and make a cape. That will make you look more like a true cycling spectator when you're running up the hill along side him.

Thanks so much everyone! I plan to use all the ideas - except maybe the underwear/superhero costumes. I had no idea cyclists were such a friendly bunch. This weekend looks to be lots of fun.
