Myself and two others hit by a car
While out on our lunch ride on Monday, June 14, 2010 we were hit from behind what is suspected to be a drunk driver. Everyone is home and was home that night, not even a single broken bone, but tons of road rash, a few staples to the head and some stitches.
Oh, I will always wear my helmet, if I forget it, I won't ride. After this accident, there is no way I ride without it.

Yeah, that would be me, and my lower back is paying for it, but it beats the alternative. It is a miracle that we all survivied, and much less that we all escaped with minimal injuries. Oh, and I don't even remember riding on Monday, and we were 3 miles from being done with a 14 mile ride. Remember, please wear a helmet, you never know when something like this is gonna happen.

Wow.. Glad you're all ok. Don't let one idiot driver ruin your enjoyment of this sport moving forward. I will say from experience, that you will be apprehensive when you get back in the saddle, but don't let it deter you.

Well, I am sure I will be apprehensive, but I don't remember a thing from what happened, just waking up in the hospital about 3.5 hours later. Never had a concussion before, and I definitely hope I don't ever have one again, as it was crazy. I don't remember going for a bike ride, I vaguely remember driving to work that morning, and vaguely remember working on computers, completely forgot the conversations I had with my wife that day before the ride. At the hospital, I treated my wife like it was the first time I saw her for the day many times as she walked in and out of the hospital room. We all plan to be back in the saddle once our injuries allow us to. Also, we were riding 2 short Monday, as one guy wrecked last week when his chain came off, and the other was on vacation.

Glad you're still there to talk about it. Over here in quebec there's a few people that died that way recently. Really sad stuff, I hate it when I read about drunk driving causing injuries nor death...

I spoke too soon about no broken bones. Even though I complained in the ER about my ankle hurting, they didn't x-ray it. I had an appt with my primary doc Thursday and he sent me for an x-ray, turns out I have a fracture in the ankle. Hey, all thinks considered, I'm just glad to be here.

wow all this biking we're doing will probably lower our chances of health risks in the future.... But we've significantly raised our chances or dying from automobiles. Had a jeep make a right on red as I was going through a green light at 45kmh on my road bike today. nearly slammed into him. Guy never even blinked.

Oh yeah, it ruined my 3 week old Mercier Kilo WT (with the 5 speed hub). And both of my buddies bikes were destroyed, but they were both due for new bikes. I can't wait for my back to start feeling better, its the worst. Like I told my wife, if it was just my back, or just my ankle, or just the road rash, it wouldn't be near as bad, but all of it together makes life miserable right now.

riding on sidewalk the other day. residential area. it might be frowned upon since you may annoy walkers. went across intersection and van was coming up fast from right. driver had stop sign but slid right thru it. i put out my right foot and actually touched their bumper. driver was older women and she did the "home alone" 2 hands to face move. hmm, no hands on wheel. i pointed to stop sign which was now near her rear bumper. do most folks know that their front bumper should be BEHIND stopsign? maybe i will ride in street now.

Omg...lucky it wasn't worse than it was. I was going to say, hope your bikes weren't damaged and you can ride again soon, but it looks like you have injuries and the bikes are trashed. Oh well! that really totally sucks, but at least they got that jerk driver. As Alex mentioned, there was a terrible accident here recently, three people killed...the driver wasn't drunk though and did not leave the scene. in fact, he got out of his car and tried to help!
I was hit once and the guy saw that I wasn't dead and took off!

Good luck man. I actually took a fall.. long story, self induced, about 1 week earlier. Had to have 6 stitches above my right eye, wasn't wearing a helmet. Boy was I lucky. I will NEVER ride again without a helmet. It almost cost me my eye, which is my livelyhood. I live up in Brunswick, GA and I saw the news in Jax about 3 bikers getting hit. Never knew I would run across this post. Good luck and hope for a speedy recovery.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Three bicyclists were injured in a hit-and-run on U.S. 1 in St. Augustine on Monday afternoon. Two of the cyclists were flown to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center. The third was transported to Flagler Hospital. Police said Michael Nally, who was driving a black PT Cruiser, hit the cyclists with his vehicle just before 1 p.m. and kept driving.
Michael Nally sits in the back of a police cruiser after being arrested by police in a hit-and-run crash that sent three bicyclists to hospitals. Police said Nally, 42, was traveling northbound on Ponce De Leon Boulevard and swerved into the three bicyclists, identified as Derick Tillman, Robert Jolley and Daniel Phillips, who were also traveling northbound.
The impact sent all three bicyclists airborne and off their bicycles, police said. "By the time I looked over, I just saw the bicyclists tumble on the ground," said Tom Shivley, who works near where the crash happened. "There were two or three of them tangled up. They were skidding across the ground."
Police said Nally left the scene of the accident and was followed by a witness who called the police to give their location. The witness saw Nally throwing a beer out of his window, police said. Police said they stopped Nally's vehicle in the parking lot of Arnold's Bar in the 3900 block of North Ponce De Leon Boulevard, where he was arrested and charged with three counts of leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury.
Police said Nally's blood was drawn and sent to a lab to determine the alcohol content of the blood. Officers said DUI charges are pending the results. All three bicyclists were wearing their helmets. Jolley and Phillips were flown to Shands with possible head injuries. Tillman was transported to Flagler Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

I just wanted to give an update to this story. Since the accident my lower back just got worse. On June 22nd I went to an urgent care to get my foot in the door at the local orthopaedic office. After the x-rays, he saw a vertebral compression fracture in the lumbar region of my back. Not exactly sure which one, but I saw it too. It took insurance over a week to approve my MRI, which I had done yesterday, and now I have to wait another two weeks to see the doctor.
The other two guys are doing pretty good, both have returned to work full time, and looking forward to riding again soon. I am not sure when I will be able to ride again, as leaning forward is very painful.
